Any other realistic options other than a 1.25 Fiesta? :)

Looking for something quite cheap to run. Appreciate any input other than the Fiesta but I know the 1.25 is a nice little engine for pootling round town (which is all I do).

If all you care about is cheap to run, then get a bubble shape Micra or the equivalent Yaris.

Had my craptactular Micra for 5.5 years now (will change if I ever leave University!) and all that has gone wrong with it that cost me money is the driver's window wouldn't wind up (1 hour labour -Only 'cos I didn't have the correct adhesive).

The Micra I have is only worth about £800, which is why I am reluctant to get rid of it, because everything works.

I wouldn't say it was the only thing I cared about, needs a slightly decent drive (which the Mk5 Fez does have) but there aren't any requirements to spec other than air conditioning and a stereo that I can remove to install a new unit.

Nothing wrong with the Micra, Fiesta or Yaris. All can come with air con but keep your options and buy on condition. Most old cars will be being sold because something big is on its way out on them.

If you decide on a fez try and get one with the heated front windscreen option. Very handy in winter.

Otherwise they are generally decent cars, just check rear arches for rust.

We owned a 2000 Mk2 Punto for 8 years from new, never had any problems with it and sold it in Dec 2008 for £1500, worth checking out if you want something a bit different to a Fiesta.

My '97 polo (1.4 CL) has barely cost anything. Tyres are peanuts, I've had a new exhaust (full) for £80, couple of other small fixes around £100-150 (thermostat, handbrake) in 7 years of ownership. Outside of MOT's its probably cost under £500 to maintain since I've had it.

The Mk5s 1.25 engine is now in the £155 tax range, crikey. Didn't know they'd made any significant changes going into the Mk.6 but the emissions are lower.

Cheers for the suggestions, I will start looking into other options.

Insurance is very much becoming a bugger! I'm getting quoted around £660 for a 1.25 LX Fiesta with 5 years NCB (23 years old) and adding both my parents on. What a rip off! It was only £500 last year for an '07 Focus 1.6 Zetec.

Toyota Yaris 1.3VVTi. Small nippy reliable cars, the interior isn't all that but they're ok for a good run around.

I will suggest these

Yaris
Micra
Fiesta
Lupo
Arosa
Starlet
ibiza
Polo
Punto

You can get some good little runners of those above for less than £2000. Just drive a few of what you like the most to get a good feel of them
