Small SSD Big HDD Optimising Performance

Most mid spec gaming laptops are being provided with a small SSD perhaps only 128GB capacity, and a large but much slower HDD. If you are lucky you might get Windows and a couple of games on that SSD.

If the 128GB SSD is supposed to be enough, and given that moving game installs from one disk to another isn't practical, how do you get decent performance with these systems? As we know if you are playing many online games you need those to load up the new levels or maps swiftly otherwise you can miss the start of a round.

I've been looking at the Intel Rapid Storage Technology thing which would supposedly create some sort of cache on part of the SSD. But that isn't going to work (unless I'm doing something wrong) as the SSD in it's entirety needs to be a single unallocated drive, no partitions even for recovery.

So what faster loading disk options are there, short of buying a decent size SSD?
