After some small stereo or 2.1 speakers.
The usually recommended bookshelf types look too big. They basically need to for behind and under my monitor.
Anything to look at, price maybe up to £100.
Only for gaming not music or movies.

It's tricky when space is limited. There aren't many good small stereo speakers. Kanto YU2 and Audioengine A2+ are two examples. Steljes NS1, were an exception, but they are no longer available.

If those smaller speakers would still be too big, then I think you'll have to go with 2.1, as stereo speakers that small, it really restricts what frequencies the speaker can output; hence why many 2.1 speakers have small satellite speakers with the subwoofer.

2.1 speakers might not be too bad a choice though, given that they'll be used only for gaming. The one thing that most 2.1 speakers really suck at, is when used for music. Considering they won't be used for music, that won't matter. Plus the additional bass provided by a subwoofer, might be welcome, given that is the one area that lacks the smaller a speaker gets.

Logitech Z623 get decent comments.

Edifier make some good speakers, particularly stereo ones. Not sure about their cheaper 2.1 speakers though.

XM2BT have a 4" woofer in the sub, which is the smallest subwoofer I've seen. 6" is common, but 4"? That's no bigger than the woofers my stereo speakers and they aren't particularly big.

Can't see many reviews, except on the rain forest India site, and those aren't particularly favourable..

If you were interested in the Steljes NS1s - I think they are just about still available (as long as you don't mind them in yellow). I bought a pair back in April of this year for ~£85 and I'm really pleased with them. The yellow is actually really eye-catching and they fit nicely on Kanto S2 desktop stands.
