sons pc is due an upgrade for Santa
I5 is too expensive so I was thinking of putting this in his case with his ATI 3870

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 630 2.80GHz (Socket AM3)

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H AMD 880G

this nets out at about £215

anything I am missing ,anything better for the money

Thanks

Dave

well havent really got a budget but when pricing up I5 is too expensive and I3 is only dual core and this AMD chip seems to be a good little buy ,I am not too bothered about the mobo but my last 4 builds have been Gigabyte boards and had no bother

Hes currently running a Opteron 165 (runs as a 4800) which is going into his brothers PC

I am very open to best bang for bucks options though

cheers
Dave

If you can stretch to it upgrade his gfx card aswell? Or maybe just ideas for his next birthday for now...?

An nvidia 460 or an ATI6850 at roughyl £130 are good ideas and it'll boost his gaming no end over his existing card!

Something like this :

Or if an ATi fanboi like me maybe this:

For £265 you could have something like this:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail - £135
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) - £59
Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H AMD 880G (Socket AM3) microATX DDR3 Motherboard - £60

Total including delivery £264.41

So for the sake of a small £45 premium over the parts you have chosen you can get a much faster, nicely overclockable processor. Though you could get a cheaper mobo as the onboard gfx is unnecessary in this instance. You could get a board for under £50 then and drop the premium paid to £35. Bargain.

Fair enough on the gfx front. STill think the small prmeium now is worth it for a processor that is much faster, overclocks well and as such hopefully last him longer. But then if all he plays is the sims the first one is good.

cheers I might have a look at that but chip and ram are just about settled now
unless anyone knows better ?
thanks
