Hi,

I need to 'down size' my Fractal R4 case to the smallest ATX case possible. Can anyone make any recommendations? I have a MSI Z77A-GD65 ATX board and a Palit 1070 Super Jetstream video card.

If your insisting on ATX, the two cases that come to mind are the Raijintek Thetis or CoolerMaster Q500L. The Sliger Cerberus X is my fave but very pricey.

Also (stolen from elsewhere):

- Geek T810/T812
- Silverstone GD09

Honestly though, I would change to a ITX MB and see the wealth of options you get then.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have just been looking at the Thetis but it states the max GPU length is 280mm and my 1070 is 285mm so I'm not sure about that one. I will take a look at the others.

Unfortunately if I go for an ITX case I would need a new MB, CPU, PSU and memory I think which I can't afford at this time.

I have the XFX 750W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' PSU, I'm not sure about the size, I'll see if I can find the specs.

Edit: It is 170mm long with out the plugs

If you can source a cheap mATX z77 board secondhand you'd open up lots of more options for smaller cases, i wouldn't expect many cheap options for Mini ITX on z77 given the age, but mATX should be doable. I can't imagine you're going to shave off much size staying on ATX, that said have a browse through Coolmasters product page, some of their lower end ATX cases are fairly small (comparatively).

Thetis is as good as it gets without spending silly money (at which point, the money would be better spent toward an upgrade).

SFF Time P-ATX is way smaller. But you need an SFX or SFX-L PSU. And I'm not sure your GPU will fit with an ATX board.

Sliger Cerberus X is again a lot smaller (about half way between PATX and Thetis). But it's really expensive.

Swapping to MATX doesn't help much. Raijintek Styx and InWin 301 aren't much smaller than the Thetis. Sliger Cerberus is expensive. And the bulk of other small MATX cases are intended for HTPCs. If you got a suitably small MATX board, Kolink Satellite might work (again, potential GPU issues).

I have 292mm long 2070 Super in Thetis. Even with HDD installed on front mount, there is still room.
I'd say 310 with HDD, 330mm without
170mm PSU wont interfere as the 16x PCIe slot is not closest to CPU

Moving form factor helps plenty if you can source a board cheap enough, it's not like the Thetis comes in cheap at £90+, you could switch form factor and source a case that'll support large GPUs and a regular PSU inside that cost.

I suppose it really comes down to how much you want to put into downsizing, pound for pound i'd personally just buy the smallest cheapest case that isn't a tin can, probably a Bitfenix or Coolermaster. It comes down to what you want to prioritise or what matters most in this equation.

Take a look at the price of Z77 ITX boards on eBay and you'll see the problem pretty quickly :p
