Strange request time.

If you happen to have a ruler in your car at any point, could you measure your rear view mirror for me, I wanna see who has the smallest one.
The reason I ask is that Lotus, in their infinite wisdom decided to fit the largest mirror known to man which just serves to destroy my forward visibility.

You can buy smaller mirrors from Hangar 111 however at £80 I think I'll pass

One guy on SELOC got a smaller mirror from a Daewoo Matiz for £3 which is a bit smaller.

Original mirror is 235mm, Matiz one is 205mm. A decent enough saving but I reckon that with your help I could find a much smaller one.

if you need to look behind you you're not going fast enough :D

strange that lotus felt the need to fit such a huge mirror, all that extra weight

My mirror has a hinge so when "pushing on" I can push it up out of the way. Not the ideal solution but as an everyday driver the mirror is rather useful.

Roll up roll up, anyone got one smaller than 200mm?

Or does anyone know any scrap yards in Bristol that I can rummage around?

No idea how big or small mine is but it's a waste of time looking into it - all you see is a blurr off the NVH.

You've never sat in an Elise by the sound of it :)

Imagine the width of the rear window, now imagine the left hand third being covered by the passenger seat headrest, and the right hand side being covered by the drivers side headrest, which leaves a rear view between the seats of about 20cm.

Now imagine a rear view mirror that's actually larger than your windscreen.

Well that's kinda what it's like ;)

you could make some kind of periscope :p
The first Countachs had a system a bit like this.

Not being able to see out behind you, because of the engine, Lamborghini created a system of mirrors so you could see.

Hmmm, maybe the Elise mirror just looks so huge cos the front screen is so small

Caterham forum is a good idea, I'll pop over there now.

What about those little stick on driving instructor additional wing mirrors you get? They're really quite diddy, you could glue it up rather than using the "lick and stick" method. And only a few quid from a motorfactors...

There is a large on Fishponds trading estate but I really dislike the owner. I once looked at a Mondeo Si (Mk2). Good condition and low mileage, but it didn't feel right and drove a bit oddly. So obviously I never bought it.

A few weeks later I got my Ghia X and it needed a door ajar sensor. So I went to this yard (Called Fiesta Breakers) and who owns it? The bloke selling the dodgy Si. Turns out it's a HUGE yard and basically does cut 'n shuts.

So, I'm never going there again.

There are a few breakers yards out toward the severn beach. I picked up a Micra starter motor there.

Do you know the small mirrors drivers instructors use? Well, Halfords sale those.

EDIT - Just read the above post - Whatever you do DONT GLUE IT! The glue will shrink and can cause the glass to crack! You can get proper adhesive pads for the jobs for a few pennies.

Ah! They're the ones I was trying to think of. Good call.

The one on Vix's smart is just under 200mm although it's quite tall in the middle (about 80mm or so) but it's kind of oval so a lot slimmer towards the ends.
