I am looking to replace my main rig (Biiig Corsair 700D, 360 Rad etc) with a nice small system that i can have on my desk downstairs or even hidden away. So the question is, what is the smallest M-ITX case that will house and be able to cool a A10-5800, 8Gb DDR3 2133 and a 120Gb 2.5" SSD? Dont even mind using an external power pack, actually i think i still have a couple of Pico PSUs about.

Oh and what cooler would be ok? Does anyone know of the dimensions/noise levels of the stock one? It will not be overclocked so doesnt have to be mad.

I dont even need an optical drive as i have an external USB one available. I was even considering a Intel NUC but i would like to be able to play older games (mame and a few steam games like avp, black mesa source, HL2 etc)and although more power hungry, the Trinity would work out cheaper and be a lot better performing than the NUC after i had bought the memory, wifi and M-Sata SSD.

Thanks

Funnily enough that was what i was looking at. Like i said tho i dont need the optical drive so it could actually be 15/20mm smaller without that...

What psus are people using on these?

Off to the internet to see what cooler i can fit in that ISK110 Vesa.. :)

Will be stripping all my current parts over the next week as well as some other S775 stuff so once i have got enough cash together i will get it on order. I might even have a go at custom fitting it to my desk and have a slot cut out in the top just for the ports/power switches.. :)

And then i will be buying for my new HTPC.. :D

Think i might go for the A8-5500 though as its only 65w TDP and power consumption on the A10-5800K Peaks at about 150w under stress. :(

I've been considering a pretty much identical build to the one in Doomedspeed's post for a while. The only thing I'm undecided on is the case/PSU. I'd like the smallest possible case but I've got no idea what PSU wattage is necessary.

Would the 90W PSU with the ISK 110 Vesa be ok or is a 150W picoPSU or suchlike a better bet?

The 150w would be much as the A10+system could take upto 100W under Max Load..

Thinking about it, a 90W PSU may not be the best idea..

Cheers. Maybe a few more hours of overtime and a Streacom F1C/picoPSU is the way to go. Unless a 90W PSU would be ok with the 65W tpd A10-5700.

Might be a little risky though and I do love that Streacom case... decisions, decisions.

I've done a fair few A10-5800k and A10-5700 builds now.

Most of them running on Pico PSU's.
If you're going to game on it, get a 160w PSU and a 192w power brick.
The 192w power brick is rated at 16A and well worth it over a 150w.

Gaming draw running stock is anything up to 130w, so you'll want that bit extra just to give you some peace of mind.
Running on the edge of a Pico PSU's capabilities will shorten it's life and isn't generally good for the rest of the system.

I have a build of my own running an A10-5800k on a 160w Pico with the 192w brick.
It's runs very nicely @ 4.3ghz, 1083gpu, 8gb 2133 Gskill Ares.
I play steam games on it in bed, fantastic little box.

Cheers Legion.. :) Any particular brand?

Edit... Just did a google... Gulp, didnt realise they would be that expensive, i suppose that the price you pay for tiny...

Sounds like a plan...

Assuming I grabbed a picpsu and a 192w brick to go with it, do you think all that gubbins would overheat in a Streacom F1C case? The prospect of a gaming overclock makes the 5800k very tempting, even if it is completely unsuitable for a case that small. What enclosure have you chosen for your build?

I think if you are looking to overclock you will struggle with that case. There isnt a great deal of room for a decent enough cooler to overclock or vent the hot air.

Oh you'll cook it if you put it in there, I have no doubts about that.
The Asrock board's VRM's run hot, even after putting Enzotech mosfet coolers on them.

In that case you'll likely fry the board unless you mod it to get some air into it.

I've built mine into a Lian-li PC-QO8B with the stock psu removed and using the 160w Pico.
It's all cooled with a Noctua NH-C14, it just fits.
With the fans modded to run at 5V, it's the quietest sytem I've ever built.

You need decent cooling if you want a good clock out of the IGP.
This and fast ram is where the best gaming gains are on Trinity, the cpu overclock doesn't matter so much.

Don't rush into builds like this unless you really do understand the pitfalls.
Planning is everything.
Otherwise you'll be sorely disappointed (and out of pocket) when you can't keep temps under control, or you fry something and it takes out the rest of the build.

Gigabyte have a board in the works, may be the end of the month or Feb before we see them, could be worth holding out to see if that's any better than the Asrock.
Notice I don't mention the MSI, being an overclocker that board is instantly dismissed.

You might get away with an A10-5700 in the Streacom, but I wouldn't advise you hammered it with heavy gaming in that case.
All these HTPC builds you see with them running XMBC, they are only under very light load.

Haha cheers yeah, I thought the 5800k would be far too much, the 5700 is what I've always had in mind and the only option I'd likely consider going down this route, but the thought of a little overclock is hard to resist.

Just out of interest mr mantis, what version of the A10 did you cram in that little Powercool case?
