Smart / IoT options for a heating controller?

I'm not sure what the right name for these devices, but what I have is a Drayton Lifestyle LP522. It's located just under my boiler and it controls the on/off times for heating and hot water. There are around 12 houses on my street identical to my house, all built in 1992 and had the same Potterton boilers and the same Drayton controllers too. I know this because I've seen them in photos in for-sale / for-rent adverts.

If I remove the controller, it reveals a metal plate on the wall which is live and thus keeps the device running. Are the plates always the same size / gauge or does that vary too?

So I'm looking to see where I can get started for something that is internet-ready which would allow me to program heating via Android. Also, having low vision, having something that I can control from Android will be more accessible. I know there is Google Nest but I think I need something else on top of that to complete the system and I'm not sure what it is. Would the thermostat dial have to be changed too? Can all of the questions in here be easily done or would I need to book a heating engineer?

I have a Hive thermostat and I like it - controllable from Android and you can buy it as a package with fitting included. My fitting was easy to arrange and done smoothly and professionally. Doubtless you could install yourself if you were keen enough, though I didn't want to try it myself.

I suspect the other big names out there (Nest, Tado) will be equally decent.

I had the same Drayton controller, installed in the hall way. Left it there and installed a nest in the living room - luckily I had a relatively easy route through a few walls and existing holes back to the boiler.

Love the display that activates as you move near it.

Also have a couple of Tado TRVs in rooms I seldom use.

Very happy with it all.
