I have a Asrock P55 board which has "Smart OC" built into the bios, I set it to overclock on the "50% Performance increase" preset and it failed to boot to POST

I reset the CMOS Settings and its all back up and running, I am guessing the bios presets are no good, so I need to set it all manually.

What would you guys recommend for starters? Cooling isn't an issue any more, its running at 26 degrees idle and I haven't been able to get it above 35c!

50% would be 4.2Ghz and that's about the maximum you can expect from a i5/i7 on 1156. Software overclocking is best avoided and it's best done in the bios. If it's any use to you my old i5 760 did 4.2Ghz in a Asus P7P55D-E Pro with a 200 bclk and I have posted my settings for you.

Settings for 4Ghz
BCLK 200x20
Vcore 1.28750v (might need more as i had a good cpu)
IMC 1.16250v
PLL 1.8625v
PCH 1.0875v

Settings for 4.2Ghz
BCLK 200x21
Vcore 1.375v (huge increase for 200mhz so i left it at 4Ghz 24/7)
IMC 1.3125v
PLL 1.900v
PCH 1.15v

All other voltages set to minimum or auto. Both spread spectrums disabled. Obviously you will probably need to tweak these settings for your own setup.


On a side note, your siggy is way too big. We are only allowed 4 lines of text.
 
Its handling 4GHz Very well.

It was running at 27c idle without overclocking - now 32c

100% CPU went up to 35c and now its 50c

Try running memtest on it.

I ran memtest+86 on it and it passed

It shows all 4 sticks @ 4gb each but in the top left it shows memory as just under 8000MB

I had it before and it turned out to be a faulty stick, hopefully its a corsair one as they have a lifetime warranty. Already had 1 replaced with no questions asked.

On a lighter note, I have selected 4.2GHz in the OC Tweak screen on the bios and its running ok. Took 3 tries to boot to post, but it worked.
 
Oh dear...

I had the same thing with my MSI P55 motherboard. It was a complete nightmare to get it to recognise anything higher than 8Gb regardless of configuration.
 
OC tweak, is that a auto overclock thing? What voltage is it using for 4.2Ghz because auto overclock tends to overvolt?

I am quite new to this, I have turned the voltage down expecting it to slow the CPU down, it didn't.

There was an option to select "Turbo" which I guess maxes out the CPU

It is running at the voltage I set below 1.4v and running at 4.4GHz. What an awesome chip!

If it goes pop, never mind, I will be buying a new board and CPU when the wife gives me my bank card back :D
 
I would be happy with that. 4.4Ghz is excellent. What are the temps like now?

The temps are the same as when it was running at 3999MHz

Idle 35c

Full load (10 mins) 52c

BUT the fan's are not controlled, they are on 100% all the time as the pump is in the CPU1 fan socket, and I only have 1 of these 4 pin plugs on the board, so no control over the fan speed and its LOUD :D

Mahoosive difference in speed. So I should be safe running it at 4.4 with the voltages specified in the last screenshot?
 
Yes, that's all good. With regards to the fans, is there no fan control in the bios? My board has a couple of 4 pin headers but I can also control the 3 pin headers from the bios if I wanted to. You could buy a cheap fan controller or invest in a pwm splitter cable such as this, this or this. There's a posh version with braided cables here for 5 fans too. You don't have to worry about them overloading the motherboard header as they get their power from the molex or sata connector.

I have got the one that splits the 4 pin connection (I only have 1 on my board). I set the bios to Level 5/9 with a 50 degree target.

It is running ok but what was putting me off the splitter idea is the fact that reducing the speed (power) will in turn slow down the water pump won't it?

The case I got has fan cables that come off a SATA cable, but I put them all on the board and tied the case cables out of the way. If the mobo controls the fans then it is a lot quieter.

Would you recommend leaving it as it is or should I plug the pump into the SATA/Fan connectors (they have a 4 pin socket with only 3 pins in)

BTW: What a lovely place Aberlour is :D I need to go and do the whisky trail when I am next that far up.
 
Not sure but I think most people on here run AIO's off the pwm fan header so that the pump speed is relative to the cpu heat. Try it and see if you are happy with it. If not run it off a molex so it's at full chat all the time.

Love it here. We are actually above the village looking down on the valley. Our view is down over the village and out to Ben Aigen. If our house was 20 feet further east we would see Ben Rinnes in the other direction. Nice and quiet here and only one streetlight at the rear which is over 120 feet away so the nights are practically pitch black, perfect for star gazing.
