What smartphone insurance do you peeps have? I'm thinking of getting one, I use the phone a lot on the bike and if one day it drops or slides out... better to be insured. :p

That actually happened to me. Wasn't a good day.

I'm also thinking of getting insurance for my S8+... 700 is too much to "let slip"

Ive got a nationwide plus flexaccount account which covers me for phone insurance along with other stuff like roadside recovery and stuff for 10 quid a month. Might be worth looking into that option with your banks

Just get a good hard case tbh, phones like s8 are quite tough and it would have to completely smash for insurance to do anything - I don't they will replace phone because it has a couple of scratches or small nick on the corner.

With the insurance prices at £10-15 a month, by the time something happens it won't be worth it and if nothing happens you've just lost in £250-300 for nothing.

Maybe if you have multiple gadget insurance from your home insurance provider or bank it could be worth but anything else seems like a waste of money.

This is what I have and have claimed on it (had cold hands from cycling, thought I had a grip on my phone as I took it out of my pocket, turns out I didn't) very easy claim process and received a replacement phone in 4 working days.

One thing, if your phone is second hand don't bother. None are valid.

Never had insurance. I'd probing 1k worse off if I had insurance. Factor in excess (if relevant) and you really aren't left with much of a saving when you can still sell broken phones for something

Some house insurances lets you add extra items it's worth looking into that so that you can cover your bike and other items.

Otherwise I wouldn't bother with seperate ones as 413x already pointed out they are expensive

Yep I use the same. Phone insurance on its own is to expensive for me to go for, but £10 per month including breakdown cover and worldwide travel insurance is a bargain. Plus I get about £6 interest per month on the account so that covers over half the cost.

I have it through my bank account too..barclays tech pack.. Ten quid and it covers my laptop too.

Came in useful when I fell in a canal with a 2 month old (non water proof) phone!

I've had the tech pack but cancelled it as I've never felt like I'll have to use it. Would you mind telling me much of a hassle was it to make the claim and was there any cost? Did they get you a new phone or just paid for repair? Did you have to send old one in? Thanks in advance :).

I think I was quite lucky as I had a Huawei P9 that was a pretty new release at the time and not really a mainstream phone, so there was non of the dreaded refurbished stock available that you hear horror stories about, lower spec 3rd party screens etc.

I got what I can only assume was a genuine Huawei warranty replacement, sealed retail box, with no accessories included. brand new phone from what I can tell.

A lot of phone insurance all use the same few 'repair centres' so your mileage may vary.

You have to follow the terms to the letter though, I paid £25 excess and sent it special delivery, an extra £7ish if I recall.. had my replacement in about 10 days from the accident.

The excess IIRC is higher if you can't return the handset I. E. Lost or stolen, compared to accidental destruction. You have to have a police officer ref. And report it to police and insurance within 24hrs.

The excess is also higher for iphones.

Should add my phone was beyond repair, no traumatic damage so it looked brand new but it was swimming in a canal with me for a good min or two, by rights they could have sent me a 3rd party refurbished back, but I think I got lucky as the phone hadn't been released that long, and not being as wide spread as say an s7 or iPhone, probably no refurbs available to send me.

Thanks, sounds like a lot of hassle. Only time I can imagine this being worth is if the phone is stolen while it's still worth a lot of money. Anything else sounds like more time to get it sorted than it's worth.

I didn't find it much hassle to be honest, but I had an old htc m8 I could use in the meantime to see me through.

I suppose it is slightly awkward to put off those who 'lost' thier phone and then flog it on gumtree or whatever.

What? Mobile phone insurance? Don't be daft :D. Look after your phone and save the money you'd spend on insurance for other goodies or put it aside in case the worse does happen - you'll already be partly there to being able to buy a new one.
I only take out insurance that's absolutely necessary, ie, buildings and car insurance. On balance, the insurance companies make money, the average customer loses out. The price of insurance policies is set to ensure this happens.
You'd be better off opening a savings account and putting £8-10 a month into that if that's what the price of mobile insurance is. In 12 months you'll have at least £120 quid

Good luck getting a new premium handset replacement for £120

Never bothered with phone insurance. Manufacturers warranty cover is enough with a good screen protector and case.

I agree with DarrenM343, yes accidents do happen but don't be so clumsy and look after your high value items or buy a cheap £25 android phone.

They would only replace is there is absolutely no chance to repair so in almost every single case, like cracked screen or small damage it will be a repair. £120 + 50£ excess, £170 - you can probably get screen replaced for £50-100. Nothing happens and you're £240 out of pocket. Anything happens towards the end of contract and the device will be worth less than what you've spent on cover. Count the time lost in dealing with this and if you value your time at anything over £5 per hour it's just not worth it. If I need to faff around going to the police station and getting reports after losing my phone, by the time I'm done I could've just as well done few hours overtime and bought a new phone.

£5 per month, or 10% of the new device's price is what I would pay for the cover, not 30-40% of the cost once you count in additional charges.
