Guys

My boss has smashed his screen (not sure how) so I have ordered another laptop from Apple that may be here tomorrow if not Monday.

I just need to know the simplest and most effective way to migrating everything including software and settings to his new unit when it arrives?

I've had a read on the web but I thought you guys would no the pit falls and have the best advice?

Many thanks in advance!

Assuming you can use the MacBook Air, you could make a time machine backup with an external hard drive and then hook that drive onto the new laptop before doing a full installation (it will prompt you for a backup having chosen the option).

I was going to suggest getting a firewire cable but I'm pretty sure the MacBook Air is without, otherwise you could have linked the two machines via that. But it's a no goer.

Hi Slogan

I was thinking of swapping the hard drives but I'm not sure I can actually get to the hard drive on these, haven't got it with me at the minute.

He does have a IOMEGA ULTRAMAX 1TB-ZML from his first order so time machine may be my best option

Swapping the hard drives may be a very messy operation.

Apparently the Time Machine installation works very well, I've heard a lot of good things about it.

As the screen is shafted I was hoping to have the option of pull the account over from the faulty unit to the brand new one?

get the broken macbook air strip out the ssd and stick it in a caddy so it works over usb boot up the new one go to Migration Assistant and copy file from "another partition on this mac" it will give you options tick all the box's it will copy the account files applications setting everything over then all you have to do is log in on the old account witch is now on the new ssd and go to users and delete the old one

this will be easy and u can use the old ssd as a external hard drive unless you want to post it to me for helping you out :D

That sound perfect however my boss would like me to send the faulty unit away (not sure where yet) and have it repaired!

Thanks for the advice so far though..

Turns out the screen is viewable on the left handside so I may be able to see what I'm doing after all...

New unit should be here tomorrow or Monday

I would just hook it up to an external display. You will need a cable adapter for it, but it will work.

You could boot the damaged one into 'Target Disk Mode', plug in a Firewire Cable, then boot the new one which will detect the old one, as a disk, and ask if you want to transfer all the Apps and Settings. Jobs a goodun.

Done this a few times. It will all be over in a matter of minutes, at which point you can go to the Pub for an hour or two after telling your boss its a ballache of a job and will take said hour or two. ;)

Stop this foolish talk of Time Machine and turn your ears this way, because Wireless migration is possible!
