Well. title says it all. its really rather impressive. Any way, I know i can take it to a shop etc but it seems to cost a rather large amount of dosh. I've had a wee gander on ebay and it seems you can buy replacement kits and do it your self

Has any one done this or have any advice on the best course of action ? Am I right in thinking that some of these kits will be sub standard screens ?

All kits are sub standard screens hence the cheap prices and will crack easier than the original screen obviously.

Very simple to replace if you follow the ifixit guide.

:( my ex did this to my 5s, she ordered an eBay diy kit and gave me a hand fitting it, then broke it fitting it.

Moral of the story don't date nut cases.

Actual moral of the story is pay the £100 odd for apple to do it for you, its basically impossible to get a genuine apple one out side of them, the colours are naff on the after market ones and worst of all they eat the battery life. It's a saving of around £80 but it completely ruined my phone (and being about 6 months till the next one is out I've really struggled to justify paying to get it done now but I probably will because its a great phone)

cheers for the info guys. i realised they wouldn't be full apple screens and was mainly thinking about colours and interestingly enough i didn't think of battery drain. I'm planning on keeping this phone for a good 1 - 2 years or until I win the lottery so maybe best just to go with apple

You can pick up original used Apple screens in grade A condition off eBay. They cost more but worth it and still a lot cheaper than Apple.

Can you provide any evidence that they're 'Genuine' Apple parts please?

Having just replaced my camera, sensor and mic on my iPhone 6
All parts ordered from above company the replacement had all Apple stamps and markings. I check with old parts exact match with serials, stamps ect hope this helps a bit

Yeah, so did the £10 battery I bought from eBay and I'm quite sure it wasn't a genuine part.

I have replaced iphone 5 screens 3 times (all the gf breaking her phone!) and its super easy. The screens are never official apple regardless of what they claim. You need to be super careful about how you assemble them as you can get the issues mentioned like fast battery drain. The colours are fine for the most part but not 100% perfect.

Quick tip. If anyone asks you to replace a 4/4s screen, say no! They are an absolute nightmare. iPhone 5 can be done in 20 minutes, iPhone 4s took me about 3 hours and you have to take the entire thing to pieces.

I thought the Touch ID button was bonded to the screen, and paired to the CPU? Meaning that any replacement would remove the Touch ID functionality.

That's what an Apple bod said to me when my screen was lifting. They ended up replacing the whole phone. Unless Apple work some magic in store with the buttons during their replacements now?

No they arent.

Unless you are an approved apple repair center you CANNOT get real apple parts.... end of.

The only way to get genuine apple parts is have an insider at one of the approved warranty/repair centers who will knock them off for you, and this is usually more than their job is worth.

Apple do not allow third parties to sell genuine parts. You may get damn good copies but they will not be genuine.

We repair phones where i work and know plenty of people in the supply chain, trust me.... you will NOT find genuine apple iphone parts on ebay either.

Notice at no point do they claim to be "genuine apple approved parts" only "UK stock of Apple iPhone 5s replacement parts" and "genuine iPhone 5s spares".... worded carefully to avoid trouble. If they did have real apple approved parts they would be shouting it very loudly.

Nah it's held on which little plastic clips and pops out when you change it. So long as you don't break the cable when you take the screen off you can keep touch id functionality when changing the screen.

This man speaks the truth. Only way to get Genuine Apple parts is to order direct through Apple GSX which is only accessible to accredited service centres. You might get "reclaimed" parts which are cleaned up and sold on.

The non-genuine parts are getting better but still can be easily spotted when servicing a handset and ultimately you forfeit any service when using these parts.

Buy a better phone :D

As above really. I've worked for the UKs largest Apple repair centre and there's no way you're getting anything out (or in!).

Full metal detector scan, boot check, bag search every time you leave :p

Get your next one insured, or at least get a premium bank account, for £8/month, my phone is covered, AA cover, travel car etc.

Best solution is take it to Apple.

They would just swap the phone for a fee and you get a brand new (ish - its refurbished) phone.

I would imagine £80-100 but worth it.

My ex smashed her 4S screen, got a cheap repair one on there and the colours were awful, screen finally started to die in a month or two with lines going across it.
