Smashed window but only the inside pane of glass broken?

Hi,

Really not sure where to get advice on this so I'm putting it in here with hope!

My mum has woken up to a smashed window on the French doors, the main point is that only the inside pane of glass has broken, not the outside? The inside pane started off with a hole the size of a tennis ball, then as the morning went on it has shattered. I've arrived and checked the outside pane, there is a scratch on the outside level with the initial hole in the inner pane.

Is this possible? Can you throw something at a window and only the inner panel breaks?

Searching for info on the Internet actually led me to here as there had been previous questions on double glazing!

Happened to my sliding patio door a few years ago. The inside pane broke, but the external piece didn't. The guy who replaced mine said something about either a manufacturing defect or heat related.

It can happen.

One of my windows was hit by a football.

The outside pane of glass was fine, the inside one cracked.

Had it happen at a place I had some years ago,when I lived in the country, had a pheasant fly into the window, out side pane was ok, inner pane shattered.

Should be covered by house insurance.
