We are currently using Dell Powerconnect switches which seem to do a good job but cost us a fortune and were a headache to configure initially.

We now need to upgrade all three of them as I now need PoE capability on all 48 ports to run a hosted phone system and connected PC of each port.

Dell N2048 want around £2.5k + VAT per switch and i think this is out of our league and probably unnecessary.

We have a small internal IT department and just want to make sure we purchase something that is very stable easy to configure and expand.

Guessing HP or Cisco as alternatives.

Any suggestions

I'm not sure what a catalyst is?

Dell have got their pricing down to £1.5k per switch which makes me we question how silly their mark up is. I've always been happy with their equipment but i'm a bit of a novice when it comes to networking.

We don't have a policy on refurbished kit and it might be a consideration depending on cost saving.

Catalyst is a line of Cisco switches, but I feel if you didn't know this already then they likely aren't the products for you/your team to configure.

I'd go for HP over Dell switching, although that said I'd go refurbished Cisco over both, but then I'm a bit Cisco biased due to my certs :p

Could you PM me with a decent supplier of Cisco kit both new and refurb? I'm pretty sure OcUK don't stock this stuff.

Would they be easy enough for me to configure for basic purposes without having a Cisco degree :) ?

Depending on your network architecture and your requirements (if any) for adding new design/features to your network, you could probably fumble through the basics with a bit of GoogleFu.

Cisco IOS command line isn't particularly difficult to use, mastering it on the other hand...

I would personally go for the 2960-x as it features flexi stack plus can supply 750w poe.

The best place I have found personally on cost is Hardware.com.

Cisco switches out of the box will just work but I recommend getting someone or learning to write a good config as done wrong you can create a security issue or unwanted behaviour. Once there up and working they are a far better switch. I can offer my services to help you :D.

we use Hp here 2920's and they do a great job, although are not cheap either.
i wouldn't go cisco if you dnt know about the cli but the hp uses the same commands as wel. atleast the hp has an easy to use gui

HP switching is good and easy to configure. Just looked online and you can get a 48 port PoE switch for £1100-1400 apparently so if you have a decent supplier you might even be able to get it cheaper. 2530-48G-poe+ is the model.

Can echo the HP stuff, we recently replaced all ours with the 2920 48 port POE range and it's working well. We had HP switches previously so the config was easy to move. Can't remember exactly how much they cost, was about 1.2k per if i recall. Been rock solid since day 1.

thanks chaps - i'll look into the HP route. I need something reliable and simple to configure. Our requirements will be quite basic i'd imagine as we're quite a small network and just want to organise some simple VLAN's
