Hi All.

We have a Smeg electric oven model SE290X, it's about 5 years old. While we were cooking today the fan and heating elements stopped working.

The oven still has power because the digital clock didn't stop. I checked the power fuse and it was OK. Is there another, obvious explanation for this? Any help would be great as have a dinner party in 4 days!

We had this with an oven recently. It was going to cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. Although, SMEG are quite a good brand

(teehee, I said "SMEG").

At a rough guess it's an internal fuse or wire has worked loose.
I doubt the fan would be controlled by the thermostat, so both fan and elements stopping would probably rule out the fan/thermostat/element being faulty, the fact the front display still works means that it's still getting power to the main unit.
From memory many ovens have the incoming power going to a common block where everything connects (IE thermostat/elements, fan, internal light etc).
Assuming you've got some basic electrical skills, common sense and don't mind spending a couple of hours carefully taking the back off you might be able to fix it fairly easily.

Remember though, if in doubt, get someone out.

I've always wondered why Red Dwarf chose the name of an old fridge/appliance manufacturer....script writer had a bad experience with one?

It was a loose reference to Smegma..... Google it

But the meaning of that seemed to be completely bypassed as everyone was far more concerned over them calling a character 'Rimmer'! (think gay)

Does it have a grill and if so does that not work either? Also im guessing theres a light on the front that goes out when the oven is up to temp this is controlled buy the thermostat on the oven. Does this light come on as though the oven isnt at the temp selected or is it always off?

Might be worth checking that the door is attached properly. We have a Smeg oven, and we had it professionally cleaned a couple of years ago. The guy didn't reattach the door properly and it wouldn't come on, there's some sort of microswitch that cuts it out if the door isn't affixed correctly. It's quite easy to dislodge the door so you might have knocked into it and done that. Just a thought anyway.

Paul.
