Smell and your memory

There is a particular cologne that does this.
Found a bottle of super strength cologne in a hostel in Australia, it was the oil type and EDP I think. I smelt it once again years later and it was like I was back there. Wish I could remember what it was called.

Yeah, certain aftershaves make me remember when I was a young'un out nightclubbing back in the day.

It's weird, I often get nostalgia for the 80's via classic action movies and synth style music, yet I was born in the 90s :/

I often wonder whether it's because the 80s had such a distinct personality when compared to 90s.

Also, Ghost perfume INSTANTLY takes me back to when I was 14 and had my first proper lady friend. Always makes me pine for simpler times :(

This mostly happens to me when abroad. The number of different smells that came from old traditions and objects seemed far higher in the 80s when i was a child than it is now. When in the Alps last year I remembered getting triggered a few times by things like wood cladding walls that had a certain smell and the pipe and tobacco shops they still have over there. Modern manufacturing methods have far less smells associated I think and we use a lot less wood.

I can still conjure up the wood / varnish smell that was there when I climbed under the dining room table as a child. Never smelt it anywhere else. Parents still have the table so I might go under and have a sniff for the first time in over 20 years next time I am there.

In my youth I spent one night with friends getting hammered, the final drink was a Cider that did me in and I ended up chundering everywhere. The smell of that particular cider makes me gag now :o

There is a particular rubber odour that reminds me of the horrors of the gas mask placed over your mouth and nose prior to a tooth extraction in the dark ages. It still sends shudders down my spine.

Had been painting something not so long ago and opened a tub of Swarfega to clean my hands afterwards. As soon as I got the smell I immediately imagined my dad in the house I grew up in standing at the kitchen sink washing his hands. I think he'd actually given me the tub a couple of years back too.

My Diesel aftershave on the odd occasion I use it reminds me of Vegas. It was the only one I took with me on that trip and I'm always reminded of it whenever I smell it.

Yeah it happens quite often. All sorts of smells do it. At times it can bring back memories of things I had forgotten ever happened, like you say. :)

Hospitals always have a creepy smell, also tobacco, used to get bus into school and lads used to smoke upstairs, so sweet, think I went into school high everyday in hindsight, years before smoking in public laws, doesn't taste like it smells though.
