What I really don't understand is the use of these in actual speech. I've heard people on voice chat in games actually say 'rofl' or 'QQ'. They were invented as shorthand so why use them in actual speech? If something is funny, you laugh. If something upsets you, you say so. Its wierd.

So it means you agree with it or mean the same and cant be bothered to type it all out..
 
We use QQ as speech in our guild directed at each other, purely as its easier to say than cry more, but would not lol, rofl or simular as like you say, we just laugh.

People that say OMG get on my wick, Fearne Cotton on radio one sounds like such a div saying it.

 
I think it comes from Japanese anime, those cartoons they make for repressed paedophiles, you know the ones with doe-eyed sexualised children, they smile like that after being raped by an octopus.
