i have this problem with my smoke machine, its not been used for at least a year i think.. But i turn it on and wait, by 5 mins its usually too hot to keep my hand on it too long and when i press the button for it to shoot out smoke nothing happens.

is it blocked?, there was a little bit of smoke fluid in the container all that time btw

and when its on for a bit a little bit of smoke comes out on its own from the nozzle, which is normal anyway.

Is the pump running? (Normally a "thud thud"/vibration from the unit)

If it is, try and pump some water through it, if it gets left for a while the oil goes manky and clogs the heater coil.

edit- you say "usuall" too hot to touch, is it getting hot now?

Might be worth giving it thorough clean out if it hasn't been used in a year. The smoke fliud could have congealed.

Wow. Post number 13 and i'm the first non-comedian to reply. What is it with GD?

*ahem* try #9 pal :p

Is the button activated by remote (wired)? I'd say check that.

If there is little puffs of smoke coming out of it then at least you know the heater is working.

Also, can you see if any of the fluid to going up the tube? Look for the bubbles, it may have air in the pipes.

Can't you just set fire to stuff instead?

About two years ago I was gigging at the Swan in Stone and somebody at the front kept shouting FIRE. "Fire by Hendrix?" I asked, he shouted "Fire" again. "Fire by Arthur Brown?" I asked, "No, Fire behind you"

A christmas candle had burned down to the decorations and it took three pints to put it out - instant smoke.
Best of it the pub is known for all of Stones firemen drinking there.
