Smoke trails on my screen...

I've been using a Dell 1906FP for a couple of years and at first I was very happy with it -- a very good PVA-based monitor (25ms Samsung PVA LTM190E4) .

But over the last six to nine months the screen has developed what I can only describe as dark "smoke trails" vertically up the screen. I hope they show up in this pic:

These are now so bad that they show up all the time unless the background is plain white. Has anyone any idea what might be causing them?

I have a three year guarantee, so I'm on the point of contacting Dell. My only problem with that is that Dell seem to have more or less abandoned PVA/S-IPS in smaller screens (all of their current 19" seem to be TN), and I can't stand the thought of a TN replacement.

Indeed, it was a bit of a shock to survey the current market after two years of only half-keeping an eye on things. I started speccing up a replacment monitor: 19-22", matte screen, matte frame, PVA/S-IPS, standard gamut.

Which seems to leave...very few options. The monitor market seems to have taken a step backwards. But now I'm getting off my own topic!

Thanks for the responses.

I'll try the hoover technique later on, mrgubby, and report back.

EsaT -- the Eizo would be tempting, except that the Eizo web site suggests it's wide (92%) gamut (spec). The LG looks as if it's worth some further research. Thanks.

Credit where it's due --

Yesterday I phoned Dell about the problem with my monitor. The customer services rep took a look at the picture at the top of this thread and immediately agreed a swap-out.

The replacement arrived today. Identical model and revision, in immaculate condition, no problem pixels. Very pleased.
