I was thinking of posting this last week when talking about the McDonalds wrap that is getting mixed feelings as to how spicy it is. A comment in the thread about an ex smoker made me remember to do this.

I have never smoked so don't know how it affects taste or how smokers feel heat from hot food, so I am curious to see the results.

How many of you guys who like really hot food, smoke cigarettes or vape?

Those who have changed from smoking to vaping, how has your taste been affected?

Those who have quit smoking and don't vape, how's your taste for spicy food now?

had a smoker, old lady come in and ask for a phaal once i had to double check because it's not something 99.9% of people can handle. with her age it could have had serious consequences she was in a party of 4 and one of the others said i'll have the same.

she polished it without breaking a sweat the other guy had 2 small dips of the sauce and left it.

i like my food spicy, spicier than most but even i know where to draw the line. xxhot nandos and the new nandos fusilia sauce aren't hot to me. i would call them medium to hot.

habanero i can handle in small amounts but anything stronger than that would likely be a huge no.

In the past 12 months I've switched from smoking to vaping to quitting.

Smoking definitely dulled my sense of taste but not overly so. I've always had a good tolerance of spicy food, and that hasn't changed on my non-smoking journey. The vaping hit my taste buds the most, with a menthol fluid, and it wasn't until I stopped that I realised how much my senses of taste and smell were being dulled. However, it didn't affect my tolerance for the heat or spice of food, just the taste.

Always hated 'spicy' hot food like in curries, and that hasn't changed... however, I always liked English mustard, Dijon, horseradish and things hot like that. American mustard is just coloured paste to me.

Not at all, really.
I have a bit more money with which to purchase higher quality food, perhaps... but we have been going to Michelin starred restaurants for ages anyway, so I like to think I have a relatively good sense of taste.

I went to a tasting menu place (michelin type quality) and it was one of the worst meals i've ever tasted.

it was all pureed veg and fruit over or beside well cooked meat. it all tasted sweet and therefore crap.

i wouldn't say they are the best for taste. it's very subjective. just because someone shops in harrods doesn't mean they know anything about fashion or decent equipment.

Haha! Just choosing to go a Michelin starred restaurant does not make you a man of good taste.

I don’t smoke. I vape only when having a beer and I love spicy food. Spicier the better. I don’t think there’s any link tbh.

I do not relate the 2 of them. I think that people that like eating hot food build up a tolerance to it and require hotter and hotter food to reach those same levels. People that are new to spice would find a veterans chilli eaters "normal" spice levels as mind blowingly hot.

Ive smoked before and no taste difference. Ive vaped before, no taste difference there either. Now i rarely ever smoke, like once every couple of months and there is no taste difference. I have not smoked for years at a time as well and not found a taste difference.

I used to smoke and eat lots of very hot food. Since stopping 6 or so years ago, I still enjoy hot food but less hot and less so. Smoking ruins your sense of smell and therefore taste too. If smokers breath out smoke through their nostrils, the smoke with affect the fine nostril hairs which we think give us our sense of smell.

So many things improve when you stop smoking.

Michelin type......?
I'm guessing you got ripped off.

It's a little subjective, obviously, but in general there are overriding standards and accepted things that people regard as good, on which to base your assessments.

OK, I have been to quite a few one, two and three starred restautrants, as well as loads that have yet to achieve one, and feel myself somewhat better qualified to claim a degree of discerning taste compared to those who live off Rustlers microwave burgers and Pizza Hut buffets....... Happy?
Yep, I’m happy. Although I don’t live off rustlers or Pizza Hut buffets, so I dunno where you got that from.

Well its regarded as the best in Scotland.

I like how you never responded to the most important part of my post.

Just because you eat in michelin star means you know **** all about food
