Smoking laptop

The charger for my laptop had a loose connection that got worse meaning the laptop wouldn't charge.

Anyway I thought I'd be clever and chopped the lead in half to try and fix it. This didn't work and when I connected one end of the wire to the other a few sparks came off and smoke came out the laptop.

The laptop still works but obvioulsy not much battery left. What damage do you think I have done? If I buy a new charger is it likely to not work now?

:o

im guessing the power wires had polarity reversed when you conencted. with luck you havent propperly broken anything, jsut heated up some trace or another. more likely tho, you have fried the psu inside laptop... the battery you have might be all you have (copy any important files off asap!)

have a word with the vendor to get them to look at it.

i would say if you dont know what your doing... buy a new charger :)

( alternatively check the rest of the cable and make sure you wired it up correctly ((top tip - ask your dad)) and give it another shot )

:) good luck

You do realise that your laptop will not be able to smoke after July 1st :p
:p

Well I'll try a new charger but I'm not holding out much hope. There was quite a bit of smoke which came out through the keyboard and speaker grills.

Thanks for the help anyway.
