Hi Dudes.

Will the WINsmp client run on a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading or does it have to be a "real" multi-core processor ?

Cheers

AFAIK it will run the WinSMP client - however it will likely run very close to the deadlines.
Also with the cache-hungry WUs it may not get anywhere near to meeting the deadlines.

Ahhhh fair enough, just wondered if it would be worth swapping my work PC to SMP or keeping it running 2 text console cores.

Cheers

If it's a work machine (assuming you do any work on it :p) then I'd say there's a good chance it wouldn't make the deadlines due to a fair bit of the CPU time being in use by other programs. If it was a dedicated cruncher it would be worth trying.

I'd personally be inclined to keep it running the normal console clients. When I was running WinSMP on my X2 3800, it wasn't making the deadlines by that much. Nevertheless, it did make them and I'm going to go back to it when I change over to Vista this week. Guess it's up to you.

Pentium 4 single core CPUs will *not* make the current deadlines. Period. While the cores will run, unless Stanford get very generous on the deadlines, you'll be wasting your time if you try to use those.

Pentium 4-D (dual core) CPUs, on the other hand, seem to be fine if you can commit them 24/7.

I saw someone with a pretty fast P4 who was making some of the deadlines with 2 hours to go. So it could be worth experimenting but I reckon that unless your P4 is clocked pretty high and doesn't do anything but fold, it's gonna miss the deadlines.

Berserker's right. There's no way an HT P4 could make the deadlines. My DUAL P4s sometimes struggle to make the deadlines. I end up having to sneakernet WUs onto faster machines.

Not all Pentium Ds seem to be able to make it either. I've tested on an 805 and an 820 and both were unable to make the deadlines at stock speed.

I haven't tried WinSMP much on my borged 820s as they're not on 24/7 but they seemed to just make the deadlines. Probably WU dependent though and they may well fail with a cache-intensive WU like a 2610.
