Well looking at post below it seems that the SMP client is the thing to use on a Quad Core machine to get better points so I installed it. After time and again getting a 'no work to be done' message I have reverted to the old 4 clients.

Anyone an idea how to get the SMP client to find work? I thought it would be able to get big units but nothing is showing up at all.

Yes, but the problem is now one I have found out about. It is on the Folding @ Home Forum. The server for the SMP units is full so gives out the IP address 0.0.0.0 when it is full. They need to install a back-up serever but nothing there soi far it seems.

I was going to pop Ubuntu on the machine to crunch but the 64 bit version of Ubuntu runs the SMP units too so may not do any better.

Any one like to comment on the choice of Vista / Linux for crunching on the normal units? Which is quicker?

Did you set up the client so that it does not use Internet Explorer settings? (not sure if that is an option in the WinSMP client).

Linux is faster than Vista. But running linux in VMWare virtual machines on Vista is fastest of all because you get a steady stream of 2605 work units. Needs a bit of memory to do so tho.

Thanks for the suggestion Cob but I did that. Looks like it might be worth Linux then. I don't have VMware but as the machine is not my main one - I have moved to a laptop - I can install Linux on the main drive and it can be a file server as well as crunch
