Afternoon all,

Can someone point me to a smp client idiots guide as as far as i can tell, I need a dual core cpu ( got a amd 4400+ ) and a 64bit linux distro.

so can I assume a 600 series intel won't work as its only hyperthreading but with 64bit extentions.

also as i'm a linux noob - how to set up on that pc without losing data - would i need to repartion and how to do that within windows.

Find the "Way To Go Team" thread in here. That has all the info that helped me get my Linux distro installed and the SMP client. [Jut ignore the stuff about FahMon and WxWidgets]

The easiest linux distro is Ubuntu Edgy Eft [6.10] AMD64 Desktop version. I'm sure someone can link you to a .torrent or the correct .ISO.

To my knowledge the CPU has to be 64 bit, so any Athlon64 Dual Core or any new Intel [Conroe etc]

Setting up Ubuntu is really easy. Pop the disc in your CD/DVD drive and boot from it. It will load Ubuntu "live". Basically the OS will be running off the CD. To install you double click the install icon on the desktop and off it goes. It will ask you for usual stuff like usernames and passwords and time/date settings yadda yadda yadda. When it asks for a location choose which HDD you want and it will automatically repartition any free space and use that. You can set how much/little it can use. Then click oki doki and off it goes. It's as easy as that. However, it would be wise to backup any important data on the HDD of your choice - just in case something bad does happen.

well I mucked it up :( , went to install ubunto 6.10 and all went well until the partitioning, gave it 60gig on my second drive and it kept saying it needed a seperate partition for the swap file, so I gave that a seperate 20gig partition and it started to install, got to the end where it said remove the CD but my keyboard wouldn't work - I assume I need a ps2 keyboard as mines usb. so did a hard restart and set the first boot drive as the linux drive ( there was some stuff already on there ) but no joy, it always boots windows no matter which drive I tell it to boot from first.

Any ideas what I mucked up

when you install ubuntu it asks ( at the end) if you want to install lilo or grub or somthing, basicaly a bit of software that asks if you want to load windows or linux.

Would that be after it ask's you to remove the iso cd, as my keyboard stopped working at that point ( I use a usb keyboard, do I need a ps2 one ) so I hard reset the pc and didn't see said screen.

god this is giving me a head ache, got smp client installed but not as a service so it won't restart when the machine reboots, looked around and there seems to be loads of different ways of doing this - i haven't even looked into getting the smp client to work when windows is running.

please can someone help me get smp installed as a service so it starts each time I log on, then so it runs while im in windows, note hair loss from stress.

Babyface if you are having trouble installing Ubuntu, you can run the SMP clinent off the Ubuntu Live CD.
It will be a bit slower, but atleast youll be up and running.
Im not sure you could use fininstall to set up a service but if you follow Stanfords guide it works.
One thing to look out for though:
The SMP clinents beta finnished on the 15-01-07 so inorder to run it youll need to set the date to anyday before the 15th.

On some PCs Ubuntu is a breeze to set up but on others it can be an absolute pig, all depends on your hardware.

Hope this helps, Tom :)

Got Ubuntu installed as a dual boot, but its getting the smp client installed to start when ubuntu starts and also running this when windows is running is giving me problems - i've only got time for a ten min fix atm as i'm as busy as i've ever been and I can't give this problem the time needed to sort.
