What I was thinking is that I boot from a liveCD and run SMP then when I need something from windows I just reboot - would everything I do be lost when rebooting?
This is for a comp running XP Pro and I can't change the partition size atm to get any space for linux.
Aye. The livecd creates a virtual drive when it boots, which is in the ram I assume? Since it wouldn't be allowed to use hdd space. Anyway, when you reboot, the ram is wiped and so is your virtual drive.
Ubuntu should run fine on anything above 500MB if memory serves and the installation will automatically create a new partition without harming your data. [I would still backup anything important though].
Now unless your HDD is completely filled to the rafters you have no excuse - except laziness. Come on man, do it for the team! There are some juicy 1760 pointer WUs around that get around 1.4K PPD on an X2 4400+
