Guys,

I've installed this following the Sirius guide, and successfully managed to drop my output from 3k ppd under WinSMP to around 750ppd under Linux with nothing else running :(

What might I have done wrong?

I set the available memory to be 500Mb as suggested (I have 4Gb available) and allowed the install to configure swap etc. VM Drive space is 3Gb.

Ubuntu was installed and then I installed all updates and set the SMP running. Linux itself is extremely jittery and not as smooth as I would have expected.

Should I have allocated more memory & drive space?

I have a Q6600 running at 3400.

Cheers

Firstly you need to run two VMware instances as each can only see two cores of your quad - then it's said it's best to run two SMP clients within each VM so you have a total of 4 clients. However I would have expected you to be getting more than 750PPD as I got better than that with my X2 under VMware. That's where my knowledge ends I'm afraid - I'm sure someone else will be able to help you work out what's up.

If all else fails install a second WinSMP client (set as machine ID 2) along with the affinity changer and you'll be seeing a lot better than 3k PPD - I was running at 2.4k PPD with one client on my quad and now I'm churning out a good 3.2k-3.4k PPD depending on what else is running. Just watch your overclock/temps as the single WinSMP client although using 100% of CPU time obviously doesn't work the clever bits of the CPU as hard as it could - mine is now running the temps I was seeing when I was doing my stability testing with Prime.

Good luck :)

You used the 64-bit (AMD) version of Ubuntu?
You set the Ubuntu VM to use two cores? Have you checked in Task Manager to see how many cores it is using. A stock Q6600 should give around 1600PPD for one VM so, as you're getting half that, it sounds like it's only using one core.
