I was thinking about starting to use the SMP client if possible and was wondering what the requirements were for running it.

I have a C2D E6600 (at 2.7 ghz - i should take it higher), 2 gb ram, running XP (32 bit). Would i have to dual boot with linux or something to be able to run the SMP client?? i`m just fed up of 206 pt units giving me a terrible score for the units cruched :(

Thanks for any help!

(and yes i did search through some threads but i was still confused afterwards)

No, you don't have to dual boot. There is a Windows SMP client but it's a lot more finicky. The Linux client also gives a few % better performance but it's not huge. The Windows SMP client cannot be in stalled as a service. However, I've been running it reliably for months now (since I don't have any 64-bit procs I can't run the Linux version). Some people choose to run the Linux client in VMWare so as to get the convenience advantages of the Linux client without having to dual boot to play games.

It's run just fine on your rig. The only consideration is that the deadlines are very short so you'd need to have your computer on AT LEAST 75% of the time.

Indeedy, I heartily recommend reading SiriusB's most excellent guide on how to run Linux in VMWare.:)

The guide is here:

http://www.aeternum.co.uk/SMPGuideVer0.5.odt

It's easier than it looks and the Linux SMP Client runs happily in the background while you use Windows for day to day tasks, and even gaming.

Essentially you download and install a program called VMWare Server Edition and use it to run a virtual machine which you install a copy of Ubuntu on. You can shut down this machine whenever you fancy or if you wish to leave it folding, just minimise it.

I have a 1.8GHz C2D laptop (impossible to overclock :( ) running the Windows SMP client and it completes the units eaily within the deadlines although it is on 24/7. A 2.7GHz E6600 (the extra cache really helps by the way) should do well over 1000ppd.

If you find the SMP Guide thread there is a pdf you can also use if you can't be mithered with installing Open Office. I keep meaning to upload the pdf to my webspace but I keep forgetting :p

The thread is here and (EDIT) the website isn't here after all (but might be eventually :p)... but the PDF is here ... honest :)

It can but you have to make sure the account that starts the service is the same as the one specified when you install the client.

Quick question, it just came up asking if i want to run the installation without IIS?

Ive found it on the microsoft site, but do i need it??
IIS? I don't see why it would need a web server (among other servers). When did it ask you this, as part of the Windows CLI config?

Is this the VMware installer ?

If so, no you don't need IIS. Just continue with the install.

Sorry, but there is a new problem. Basically after installing VMWare i loose my internet connection.

I`m still physically connected to the router and can access it, but i cant load *ANYTHING* based on the web. The Internet Connection gateway vanishes from the network connections, but apart from that i cant see any difference.

The only way to resolve this so far has been to do a system restore. Anyone else run in to this problem?
