SMS Backup for Android

Currently I use an app to do a daily backup which I then send to my email on a monthly basis. What I would like is the following:

The messages auto SYNC to my gmail
The messages are grouped by contact
I can view the messages in a threaded format like my phone

I have done some looking but can't see if Google can support this and if there is an app that does it as well.

Probably not possible but would be good if it is

My wife has SMS backup+ I think it's called and this auto-syncs her SMS to her gmail
Not sure about your other requirements though

That's the problem. It's the storing on gmail that's the issue as I haven't found a way to have them stored on gmail in a decent way.

Hold up! I tried that one you mentioned and it appears to be suitable as gmail groups all the texts within a single conversation for each contact... Much obliged.

After a while you'll find that GMail isn't grouping them, I have loads of different threads for conversations with the same people and use SMSBackup+, I don't care about them being in different threads though since I just use it as a backup
