We use several bits of software in our company for monitoring servers, routers etc and the software has the ability to send an SMS to us should something go wrong.

What hardware do I need to make this possible?

Sorry my bad, I should have been more specific.

We are not looking for some sort of bulk SMS software or service, something like a PCI card or external device that we can put a SIM card in.

Then if a server or network component fails it can send us an SMS to let us know.

Im not sure what your after is possible. I know we use sms suppliers whereby it sends an email out to a number and that is then text messaged accross.

There is products available but there much much more expensive, i think we found them to be between £900-£1500 and then your still paying the cost of a SMS message a time.

We also went the clickatell route, which ended up a lot cheaper in the short and long run (as the SMS costs with clickatell are considerably cheaper than using a UK Provider SMS).

Unless you have no internet connectivity at all, then i cannot see why you wouldnt use them or a company like them, they provide very detailed specs on generating the SMS message, via HTTP/s , FTP, SMTP

£900 to £1500?

I've got one of these hanging off a RS-232 port on a server. Slap in a SIM card and off you go. Cost? £125.

We use it with GFI Faxmaker for sending out SMS messages from Exchange/Outlook, but you can also use it with GFI Network Server Monitor for monitoring / alerting.

Usually a Nokia with a data cable will do the job, or a GSM modem as mentioned by #Chri5#.
