My car is in for its service and MOT and I've just been sent the "health check" video. They've mentioned a snapped centre exhaust bracket. I'm told it doesn't affect how secure the exhaust is and "should go through the MOT fine".

They mentioned it would either need welding, or a whole new exhaust section (£££+). I'm wondering whether I should leave it, get it welded, or do a semi-bodge with something like THIS which looks like it'll do the job.

What say you all?

I think the main issue is that it'll add extra stress onto the joints if it's not secured so there is the potential for further damage.

I'd get it welded myself, or some metal cable ties just to take the weight.

These were my thoughts, in regards to the extra stress on the joints.

They (Ford dealer) said they'd have to send it off somewhere to get it welded so I told them to leave it.

It could be worth giving some local garages or exhaust places a call and see if anyone is willing to weld it for beer money.

The bracket you posted may be a decent solution but I have never used one so cannot really comment on that.

Broken support = MOT fail

So you shouldnt leave it quite apart from any other reason. Welding onto rusty metal can be tricky. In-situ might make preparation difficult, Removal of an old exhaust system can involve so much hassle that doing so only to put the old one back might not be worthwhile (Especially if it uses the "Sleeved" type of joints)

Me, I would look for something like this..

It would be awkward even seeing that to weld it plus you run the risk of blowing a hole through the exhaust.
What you could do is put a clamp around the exhaust then weld that old hanger to that.

I'd do your semi-bodge. In fact I have done your body, and most Volvo P80 owners have had to do the same too. Never had an issue with rattles, MOTs or support since doing it.

You need to assess the overall security of the exhaust system. One or more missing or defective exhaust mountings doesn't necessarily make the exhaust insecure.
