I have been toying with building a new pc for my Dad for simple web surfing, ( no games, no heavy office apps) or buying a complete desktop off a well know aution site. His current outdated pc is frustraitingly slow and barely manages 1 task at a time. ( I have already upgraded it as far as it will go)

What I do want is something snappy and fast, that is more than capable of multitasking, that ultimately will be ran until it dies, so i still want it to be reasonably snappy in two years time. ( example my current Quad core Q9650 is still going strong since 2009.)

Must be Win7 based.
Preference Intel Chip based
Would like an SSD for O/S
I dont mind onboard grafics, must have both VGA/DVI
8gb, if not (16gb ram for future)

I have:
drives for storage,
optical drives,
case (no psu)
monitor,
keyboard/mouse etc, but no OS

Budget upto £500

Ive had a good read of recent threads, and have a few ideas, but am curious what you would select.

Cheers

Don't think the CPU will hold you back TBH, whatever you choose.

No need to spend £500, I'd just go i3, B75 / H77, 8GB, win 7 home, with a good SSD 128GB. That's where the bottleneck is for a general purpose machine.

i3 and the SSD will make it very snappy.

The onboard graphics will be fine for browsing the web and other general tasks.

Make sure that the storage and optical drives are SATA.
