After years of being stored in a box in the loft I took out my Super Nintendo as the family wanted to play some old Mario games again.

But as it turns out the SNES refuses to play the games, out of ~25 games 3 work, 5 work up to a point and then the display becomes garbled and the rest don't work at all.

I have tried to clean the contacs with alcohol and blew away some dust but this hasn't helped and I know the SNES was working fine when I put it in storage as otherwise I would have thrown it away.

So does anyone have any other tips to get it to work?

i had the a similar scenario the other day with my old megadrive (sorry i was a sega kid) worked fine when it went up when i got it out i couldnt get a picture out of it.

sorry i cant offer any repairing advice, but i found a few retro console forums that offered a lot of advice that i tried to no avail, i ended up getting another one off ebay yesterday, now all i need is a better connection for the aerial as the RF input on my TV is very fuzzy, works well when i hold it in but goes fussy again once removed*. im gonna try an extension see if that helps at all.

edit *still playable but as if its not tuned in perfectly

i thought you could fix every SNES issue by pulling out the cart, blowing in the slot and wiggling the cart back in :D

Get a can of compressed air, open the flap and blast the slot then get some electrical contact cleaner and some cotton buds and clean the connectors on the cart itself. Should sort it out.. :) You can even blast a little bit of the contact cleaner in the slot as well but make sure you leave it to dry for a while before using.. :)

I tried blowing, sucking, inserting slowly, inserting from an angle (still talking about the SNES :D ) but nothing has worked :(

It is very annoying as I have 3 games that works flawless so the machine isn't totally broken.

I guess all that is left ot do is do be a bit more aggressive in the cleaning of the SNES contacts with more alcohol/contact cleaner

Mine did a similar thing when i pulled it out of storage.

I managed to make them work by inserting game switching on then pull them game out slightly (obviously it cant come out to far) and then resetting the machine. Worked on all my games that didnt want to load.

you could try a chip and pin cleaner card. you know the credit card sized felt cards covered in IPA? barclaycard issue them to retailers that get given new chip and pin machines. that could possibly work, if you rub it back and forth in the slot.

You could always buy another one. Shouldn't set you back more than 3 buttons, or you can get one with a bunch of extras for a clay pot.

Edit: Zensuji, your sig looks familiar. Is that Ichimaru Gin?

bit of a guess, but it could be the battery backup for the saves in the carts which has gone, although I would think this would usually just prevent the games saving between switch offs.

ive got 3x snes and some cartrages work in one and dont in others, i would guess its just the snes being funkey
