right,

Has anyone here got a snooper/speed camera detector etc - or any experience with them?

And second of all, are they legal? :o

cheers!

My dad has a snooper sirius I think its called? he thinks its excellent it picks up pretty much every camera he passes. And yea I think its fine as it has gps also so you could argue it was bought for that. Bit of a grey area if its just a speed camera detector though.

Detectors = Legal, to use and to own
Jammers = Legal to own, ILLEGAL to use.

A snooper et al is absolutely 100% bona-fide legal.

Had a Snooper before my TomTom + cam database & it worked very well. This is going back a year or two though & I believe the company may now be in financial difficulties & thus the updates may no longer be up there with the rest of them in terms of accuracy.

Could be wrong about this, but sure I saw it somewhere

They are legal because technically they are not warning you about the speed camera, they are warning you about the "accident blackspots" that the cameras are watching or something (i think)

i thought recent legislation had banned/was about to ban detectors as well?

detectors yes, GPS locators no

this is really irrelevant as both laser and radar detectors are next to useless in real life, the GPS locator is your best bet

I had a detector a few years back and it was constantly going off, traffic lights and sliding doors on shops are just a few of the things that set it off.

I don't know if they've improved since then though, I think the BEL RX65 is one of the best out now though.

the camera systems are something i don't know a great deal about, but i was was under the impression (which it seems you share) that by the time you've detected it, it's already nabbed you.
so the question begs to be asked, are detectors worth the money?

That's definately the case with laser detection, theres more scatter with other cameras but it's still very hit and miss as to how effective they are.
