Hi,

Just wondering if there are any alternatives to synctoy, prefereably free?

I normally have mine set to echo, but everytime I format my PC and resync it adds all new data but doesn't delete any letting the drive fill up.

Suggestions?

Syncback SE and Pro are good but not free, and the older freeware version is a bit feature-limited.

FreeFileSync is the best... errr... free file syncing utility I've come across to date - plenty of options, although some not immediately obvious as the documentation is a bit minimal (check out the readme.txt file in the installation folder, and also the user forum). :)

edit: I don't like Allway Sync much either - it won't copy open files, and the free version has a limit of 40,000 files in a 30-day period...

Can FreeFileSync sync open files or currently in use files?
Yes (ish) - it comes packaged with the file "shadow.dll", which you need to unzip manually to the installation folder to enable use of the Windows volume shadow copy service.

It's a bit awkward admittedly, and it doesn't seem to work properly at present with Windows 7 x64, but the developer has promised to tidy things up for the next release (3.2), for which there will be a native Win7 x64 version. There's been at least one release per month since the project kicked off, so there shouldn't be too long to wait.
