ok so had my 5870 since launch. i turned it on late last night to be met with the gou fan spinning up to maximum and no monitor signal i immediatly thought damn, and switched it off, turning the machine back on again it seemed to work normally -

(the fan never noticably spins louder on post) feeling tired i went to bed , now i wake up this morning and this time it took 3 tries to get it to boot properly (same symtoms as before)

when it finally does boot the fan seems to be spinning louder than usual but calms down once it gets into windows. as of yet i have been unable to determine if the card gets into windows with no signal. gaming seems to work fine. temperatures seem average around 75 on load 55-60 idle as i have 2 monitors so the 2d clocks are virtually the same.

when i turned on and it worked fine after not working i got a windows did not shut down correctly message. would this confirm that it did infact post and start windows just not display a signal? but that does not explain why the fan was spinning at 100% this would suggest it was unable to load some fan control driver? which would suggest it didn't post?

i have not been able to replicate the problem since this morning.

anyone had anything similar? thanks

mmm you kinda dont make sense, especially when you get down to the 4th paragraph. have you updated the drivers? or as i believe tried rolling them back as ive read about issues with certain drivers

Have you overclocked your pc at all?

I get that sometimes when tinkering and my oc fails. GPU fans spin up 100% and no display. a power cycle often corrects this,

Also both my 5870's ramp up on power up. then settle to 20% or what ever it is that sit at normally.

Both Xfx cards.

only a real small overclock on my i7 - might prime it again then to make sure it's still 100% stable, thanks.

lordmike, did yours recover from not displaying a picture? has it happened since?

i still cant get the thing to replicate itself - it happened once last night and twice early this morning i've switched my pc on and off 6 times or so since then and it's not happening anymore - weird.

ok well, i was surfing the internet and lost signal to my monitor and gpu fan spun up. darn, i reset my cpu overclock and see if that helps, damn if this is the gpu, it will be the 2nd one to fail in 6 months, grr.
