So AV is needed is it?

i've not used it for years, much faster without it

just give yourself read-only to everthing and no worries

dont expect linux to make you automaticaly immune to everything. There was an article on slashdot a few days ago about how a supprising number of linux boxes are beeing used for ddos attacks or something like that, and the majority of the owners were compleatly un aware, proberly under the false assumption that linux would make them immune to things like having their pc secretly conntrolled by others.

i started a thread on another forum recently about not running an AV and was flamed by everyone. apparently it's my fault that everyone else has spam emails/are infected.

the argument was "what if......". sorry but i don't buy into any of that scaremongering BS. i know what i'm doing thank you very much. :)

Don't get why someone would not run one. It's not like they actually slow your PC down. Maybe back when we all had 486s yea, but not now.

As for the above post... knowing what your doing might not come into it. One day you will get a virus from somewhere for whatever reason - remember not only dodgy sites can get them - and you will come on here and moan!

The people who flamed you were right, though perhaps not about you specifically. It is true that people who think they know better and people who don't know what they are doing at all are the reason why viruses spread so easily.

It is better to be safe than sorry, especially when there is no real reason not to use AV software. :)

For people who don't know what they are doing, then yes, AV IS required.

But as most of us on here and pretty competent its really not needed.

6 months and nothing, hell 6 years and nothing.

Ok fine if you want to use it, but you can't flame people who know what they are doing and don't have it. Because its not needed!

i run AVG and never even notice its running... i have auto update and auto scan as low priority as reboot on but it never actually runs because i usually put my pc in hibernate or just cancel it because i want to do something it slows down (games load VERY slow when its scanning), but if im just going on the internet or something i never even notice its on, and im probably not going to re install it next format:p

i certainly don't recommend going commando for everyone. it's just right for me. i'm the only user of my pc and i wouldn't let anyone else use it unsupervised. because let's face it, the only way to get infected is through human error. contrary to what some people think, these things don't magic themselves on to your system. you have to actively accept a prompt, run a program or visit a malformed site which takes advantage of an unfixed flaw in your browser. that will never happen to me. i am confident of that. :D

I genreally will have one installed, but a lot of the time I have gone for years without using one, as long as you don't open email with "open this attachment" or use I.E. then you're basically fine. Firewall is a must though IMO...

I tend to be 50/50 on this one, really. Yes, Anti-Virus is needed. For me it's a must have as I deal with other people's PCs all day long and I use my flash drive to load tools/fixes ect onto their PCs at times. However I now just use a CD with tools on it. Having said that though, I find that I don't really need an AV on my home system to.

With a little bit of being careful when browsing the web, coupled with using the NAT firewall on my router I do not use AV software.

Myself have on xp:
Xp firewall enabled
NAT firewall on router
ISP's webmail filter for spam & virusses ( virusses never enter my webmail, never mind my pc, and spam gets into spamfolder )
NOD32, just to be safe, it saved me numerous times from trojans from suspicious sites.
Spybot & Ad aware.

When I scan my pc I never find anything than a lost trojan downlaoder (wich got onto my pc in vista prolly) or tracking cookies.

In Vista I've disabled all security rubbish and the only protection I ave is my NAT fw.

However unless you're reckelss like me and enter any site even the suspicious ones, you don't need AV at all imo, I've been without AV for like 2 years before I gave kaspersky a go for a month and before I went nod32, and nothing except (again) some trojan downlaoders popped up (not the trojans itself).

It's probably better to have AV and not need it than to.....etc

You can be careful, but I picked up a trojan the other day from a bbc website - NOD32 instantly spotted it, but would I have noticed it without an AV installed?

My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek. I am no less careful using Linux than I am running Windows. I am behind a router, which has always covered my firewall needs, and I generally stay away from dodgy websites and don't download attachments unlesss from a trusted source.

I haven't had a virus in Windows for years - the last one I had was MS Blaster and I got that through my own fault - I started browsing before I had installed MS updates :p
