my current car is 3.5 yrs old, and when i renewed tax disc it was still within the 3 year of being new, so no MOT was required.

I'm about to trade in the car to a dealer and had been looking for the MOT cert and servicing documents, but couldn't find the cert. Checked online, and no record was found, and checked when the car was registered and turns out the 3 yrs ran out 5 months ago..... i had another car that needed MOT and just assumed i had done the certificate when the tax went through ok...

it's been a complete oversight.....

I'm trading the car in this weekend, so should i fess up to dealer and say there is no MOT and drive illegally for the remaining 2 days ( i know they'll do a new MOT cert when they sell the car on), or try and put it through it's MOT, I'm very confident it will pass.

Afaik you are only allowed to drive a car to a mot station if there is no valid mot on car at present.

That's why he's talking about driving illegally, I'd just get it done personally as you said it's almost certain it'll pass so it's not going to be a massive fuss but trying to get decent money out of a dealer without one may well be.

surprised ya not been picked up by one of those tax/mot/insurance checker cameras... oh well ay? bit late now! maybe because you taxed it you got in some loop hole until your next taxing :p

I'd probably get it done though out of knowing I'd probably get caught on the way to the dealers to sell the car lol... now wouldn't that suck hehe

Should breeze through at just 3 years 5 months old unless you've been abusing it.

Im not sure why we get road tax reminders, but no mot ones? Both are illegal.

well to get tax you need valid mot and insurance so they probably just assume people will remember them hand in hand. I know I do.... I see my tax disc is up at the end of this month and think.... ah... damn yea... better book that MOT that must me due around now...or something...maybe? :p MOT is one of those "it's done and completely forget about" things for me xD I want the stickers! life would be a little easier :p

No, that's a new requirement.
More likely because no tax is lost revenue :p

why do people moan about not having a sticker yet not bother to take vosa up on the text message reminder service for your mot that's offered on the certificate?!

Honest mistake that you are looking to rectify. As has been suggested, just get it tested. Had you been pulled, unless you were incredibly unlucky with the copper, it would have been a case of telling you to get it sorted ASAP.

The thing with no MOT, is that you're insurance is probably invalidated too. So all it takes is one of those police cars running number plate recognition cameras, and you'll get done for no MOT and no insurance. They often sit in busy areas (I've even seen them at the entrance of big supermarkets) and they just trawl the traffic looking for plates that throw up alerts.

That'll mean a big fine, points, and you'll be crucified on insurance for years to come.
