So, bees are now fish.

IIRC they're not actually saying they are biologically fish, but that their behaviour and freedom of movement etc and how vital that is, is similar to fish and essential to them and thus for specific purposes they should legally be given the same protections as fish.

From what I understand it's not a stupid decision when you look the the background to the case and the legal framework and reasoning, especially as there was no existing provision for insects (and I suspect the actual legal documents don't call them fish, but draw the analogy and precedent).

I don't think Pizza was ever ruled a vegetable, but from memory after much lobbying by various food companies/providers ketchup was at one point considered a vegetable for the purposes of school meals.

This has been done to prevent the almond industry killing billions of bees per year for the industry. IIRC more bees die per year than the rest of agriculture combined or something crazy like that. Bees are super duper important so these protections should be welcomed.

But yeah, the law is dumb - they should just be given protection as bees.

Vegans: "can't eat honey, animal cruelty innit"
Also vegans: "kill all the bees so I can have my animal cruelty free milk alternative!"

That law must have been written on the back of a fag packet or something! Not only because it's written loosely enough that bees could be classed as fish, but also it just doesn't have a category for invertebrates. And California is supposed to be one of the better states for environmental protection...

Does this mean that Amber Heard's dog can now be retrospectively prosecuted for bee-e-cide?

Bees grouped into the same protected category as fish because it already includes invertebrates.

Clickbait nonsense drummed up by the agricultural groups to undermine the case no doubt.

  • Invertebrates get added as an addendum to an existing fish category.
  • Court rules that the commission actually has authority to list more than just aquatic animals
  • Fish category then effectively becomes "Fish & invertebrates"
  • People lose their minds because "America"....
