So close to the Witcher 3 I could almost taste it, and then...

Basically I just got a brand new custom PC today (4950k & GTX 970 for playing the Witcher) but when I tried to turn it on my monitor wouldn't recognise it. Tried it with two other monitors (VGA) and a TV screen too (HDMI), to no avail.

I trawled the internet looking for clues and eventually figured out that it's the graphics card ( :'( ) that's the cause. PC starts fine as long as the card isn't slotted in. I moved it to the second PCI-e slot and my monitors still didn't work, so I know it's the card and not anything else.

I'm going to call OcUK first thing tomorrow morning, but I'm wondering... do I have to send off the whole thing, or can I just send back the card? (I've already installed Windows 8, and I'm wondering about time/postage costs)... And for those of you who've been in my position, how did it pan out? (What did you wind up sending, etc.)

Sorry for grilling you... just looking to get experiences (and sorry if this is the wrong area -- I doubt OCUK's customer support are on atm and I plan on calling them first thing tomorrow anyway. As with every forum I'm willing to bet there's someone experienced around at this time of night!)

I'm bummed because I've been looking forward to playing the Witcher 3 so SO much, and I'm wondering what happens from here and crossing my fingers in the hopes that it won't take too long..!!

stick a post up in the CS section they'll get you sorted sharpish

couple of things though have you tried the onboard graphics (if your pc has this) and does the card have all the required power connectors securely fitted?

those pcie power connectors can sometimes not seat perfectly and cause issues

You mention it works as long as the card isn't slotted in - are you plugging in your VGA and HDMI cables into the motherboard I/O or on the GPU itself? It needs to be the latter.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence here, just covering the basics :)

Thanks for the responses guys!! And thanks 233!! It's working now :)

@233: It was the pcie connector -- turned out that one of the six pins was too short to reach (it looked like it had been snapped). So I guess it both was and wasn't about having enough power :D

My mobo is an SLI mobo so I just switched it out for the spare cord that came with the packet and everything's been running like butter since! Just so relieved that it's not the graphics card that was busted ><

@Beardy: I've got a SuperFlower Golden Green (750W) and everything else was working and/or lighting up so I knew it definitely wasn't the PSU not working.

@RJC: Yes and no, it's custom built :)

@ Nocky24: No, it's a good question -- I've actually been slotting it into the motherboard since I'm working on an old monitor until my gaming monitor arrives and only the mobo has a VGA slot. I've got a HDMI cable ready to switch when the monitor arrives (tomorrow), though!

Seriously, THANKS A TONNE! I was really freaking out last night, thanks for the helping hand!!
