So, F1 drivers are supposed to be the best, right? (DRS @ Spa)

The FIA have said that no-one can use DRS at Eau Rouge.

Now, it may very well be a sensible measure for drivers to not use DRS at that particular corner. But it would be nice if they could let the drivers decide that one for themselves, you know? Why does it need an official decree from the governing body? Are they assuming that the F1 Super License holders that go out and drive these cars are ******* morons?

I shall now open the floor for flames, derision, misquotes or being outright ignored.

It's just the usual health & safety ********s of the 21st century. I'm sure they could judge for themselves easily enough :(

Exactly the same discussion will happen as happened about the tunnel at Monaco.

Yes a lack of rear downforce through the corner could cause some accidents, but surely the drivers should be able to decide this.

Once again I doubt this has anything to do with safety. The FIA know that this area of the track is right on the edge of the working zone for DRS, and allowing it will mean top teams with more downforce will likely be able to use DRS while lower teams would struggle. They don't want to have to deal with whinging teams complaining someone has an unfair advantage by being able to use DRS through Eau Rouge.

It only affect qualifying though, and will be the same for everyone, so its not really an issue

EDIT: Ah ****, just read where the DRS zone will be :(. The Kemel Straight into Les Combes is a damn good spot for overtaking as it is, we dont need people sailing bye halfway down the straight :(. I was actually expecting 2 zones with 2 detection points, given Spa is the longest track.

Once again the FIA claim to do something for the safety of the sport and "fans" are going to say that they are doing it for some other reason. Honestly they cannot win. If they allowed the use of it and someone opens up wide in Q3 and kills himself and some spectators the world will ask why it was allowed if there were questions over it.

And according to the autosport article, it was reservations raised by the drivers that brought the matter up in the first place, same as in Monaco. So not just the FIA banning it to help Ferrari, hamper Redbull, mix the field up, kill kittens, declare war on cheese puffs, etc.

Slightly ironic op, the hole point of DRS is to take driver skill away.

thats a bit of an exaggeration imo

I Totally get why you say that - but aero effects will always have a bigger say in any overtake than driver skill by a huge margin (with current cars)

Personally think its wrong to do this ban, it should be up to the drivers - those who can handle it should benefit like any other skill

In an article I read before, some teams/drivers have been having problems with DRS staying on when they thought it was off causing problems in corners.

Here it is, from BBC article:

It has emerged that some drivers have been finding DRS complicated to use, and have occasionally become confused as to whether it is being deployed on their car.

The FIA has learned of times when drivers have headed into corners thinking the DRS was not deployed when it fact it was, causing them to battle to keep the car on the track.

The consequences of this happening at Eau Rouge are of significant concern, and are the main reason why the ban has been imposed.

So seems like issues with DRS not turning on/off properly are the cause of the ban.

most cars would be fine using it on the exit of eau rouge anyway i doubt even the redbulls could use it actually going up the hill even though the corner is flat out

if they allowed it i think only RBR would be able to pull it off.

but i agree, let the drivers find out for themselves, if they have the balls go for it, if not hold fire on the button.

I wish people would stop blaming everything on health & safety.

Someone dies = "ahhh why didn't we do more?!"
No one dies = "stupid health and safety ruining it!"

Do you really need DRS on what is effectively a hill? I'd rather see it used on the approach to the busstop chicane than see someone hit the grass at crazy speed because their aero didn't re-engage at the top of the hill.

Not meant as an attack, but people are quick to blame it on 'elf n' safety whenever it suits them. Too much bad rep from over zealous jobsworths that use it as a smoke screen to stop people doing something they don't approve of.

This isn't that outrageous is it? The Monaco tunnel was just idiotic.
