As per title really - I have learned how to stop hiccups, but it involves some pain/user participation.

In the past, when have had hiccups, I have spanked myself on the head with a large, heavy metal bar. This really hurts, but it stops my body from hiccuping.

If I now start hiccuping, I can usually stop it by imagining a big, heavy bar belting my head. Sometimes it doesn't work, but a few blows soon sort out my stupid body's reluctance to bow to my brain's superior 'think power'. Other times I have to belt myself, but only once or twice tbh.

Why do we hiccup and can we control them?

That's it really - over to you :)

Just need to 'think' my diaphragm relaxed, and it does - stops the hiccups immediately :) . Annoys my family when I do it and they can't, however unfortunately it is one of my few skills :(

Close your nose off, close your ears off and get somebody to hold a cup of water in front of your mouth and keep drinking from it.
I've never known it not to work.

Your diaphragm has an itch... so scratch it by breathing in until it feels like your lungs are about to explode, then breathe out until it feels like they are about to collapse..

Job done.

Some interesting ideas.

What works for me is holding my breath, swallowing five times (while holding breath) and then forcing a burp, if you can burp it's virtually guaranteed to make it stop.
