Looks what will be a fantastic entry into the full frame mirrorless market. Granted Panasonic already has mirrorless experience with its m43 cameras.

https://www.engadget.com/2018/09/25/panasonic-announces-two-full-frame-l-mount-mirrorless-cameras/

The key features of the newly developed S1R and S1 cameras are as follows:

1. Newly-developed 35 mm full-frame image sensor and image processing engine (Effective pixels: approximately 47M for the S1R and 24M for the S1)

2. World's first*1 support for 4K 60p/50p video recording in a full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera

3. World's first*1 full- frame camera equipped with Dual I.S. image stabilisation enabling handheld shots for dark or distant scenes that would previously have required additional equipment

4. A double slot for XQD memory cards and SD memory cards: a first for Panasonic

5. A rugged triaxial tilt LCD: emphasising ease of use and supporting professional photography and videography

6. Utilising Leica Camera's L-Mount, making it possible to use alternative lenses that meet the L-Mount specifications of partners*4 Leica Camera and Sigma, increasing options for alternative lenses

Designed to incorporate an entire array of Panasonic technology refined over a century in the consumer electronics business and ten years developing Mirrorless cameras, the new S1R and S1 models will retain essential user-friendliness and robustness as tools for photography or videography by professionals.

For the existing LUMIX G series of Micro Four Thirds Mirrorless cameras, Panasonic will begin developing a Leica DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm F1.7 lens that will achieve the world's first*5 zoom with a constant aperture value of F1.7. In addition, support services for professional photographers and videographers will be available in selected European markets and the United States this year.

Dual card slots, 4k @ 60fps, IBIS. Partnership with Leica & Sigma for lenses and shared mount.

Discuss

Panasonic were already good for video, and with that 4k @ 60fps I imagine vloggers are drooling over this.

It feels like mirrorless done "right" - cannot wait to see it compared to the Sony A7III & A7RIII

I don't believe I'll ever have the need to go FF from m3/4 (famous last words, right?) but very happy to see Panasonic join forces with Sigma and Leica and introduce a Full Frame system into their product line, I hope a lot of the new technical developments filters up/down into both of their systems.

These two cameras from Panasonic appear on paper to be absolutely cracking cameras in terms of specs and if the price is right, they'll give others a headache in what is already an intensely competitive market.

As for concerns over DFD, there are professionals using current Lumix cameras for all kinds of work for video and photo, nevertheless CAF/DFD does have it's limitations but hopefully Panasonic will address and improve DFD to get closer to PDAF/Dual Pixel performance.

Exciting times ahead. I wonder what the next few days of Photokina will bring.

I have an Olympus E-P5 and a Ricoh GR (APS-C), and the GR, even with its ancient sensor, completely blows my Olympus out of the water in terms of sharpness and data I can recover from the shadows/highlights.

I definitely want to change the Olympus for maybe a Fuji or maybe even full frame mirrorless. Thinking about the loss I'll make on the Olympus is painful though.

I think its a great idea and with Sigma and Leica they should do better than Canon and Nikon's pathetic efforts. My only concern is that unless they change their AF they will be lacking way behind the competition.

I hope they improve on DFD or add phase detect because it’s just not up there yet with the other options.

You can’t have video CAF that has to wobble constantly to know where to focus.
