So how does a 4870x2 stack up these days...

Its been a while since I upgraded my graphics (Oct 08 I believe). I was wondering with a million and one iterations of both Nvidia and ATi cards, where the 4870x2 sits in the modern pack.

Is it worth upgrading to something faster on a new i7 system I am building. It will mainly be used for FSX/Car games of any sort!

Obviously money is an object and I am not really wanting to pay more than £150 + (whatever the 4870x2 + accelero is worth).

X2 is ~5870 speed.

X2's go for about £120 or so.

So you'd be looking at about a £270 budget, which would just about net you a new HD5870.

So you'd be paying £150 to have roughly the same performance, but a single GPU (so no crossfire issues), DX11, it'd be cooler, quieter, and less power hungry.

Whether that's worth it to you... that's your decision.

Thanks thats put things more into perspective. I think i will hold on to it, it should perform better on an i7 than my present system (see sig). Then pick up a 6xxx series when it comes out in the US (Im there quite often, although when I got the 4870x2 the exchange rate was £1:$2)

EDIT: Accelero is awesome piece of kit, definitely worth it!!

x2 go for a lot more than £120 on popular auction sites!! more like £200

Skip this gen and wait for the 6xxx series.

I'm in the same boat, but when the 6xxx series comes out the resale value of a 4870x2 is going to nose dive

indeed, but rare as hens teeth! I've been trying to get one in the UK for yonks now :(

I got mine from the UK. That was about a year ago, no idea what the availability is like at the moment, sounds like its non-existant!

The only benefit in changing cards on your budget is that the 5870 supports Eyefinity which is great for racing games and i imagine for FSX, but if u dont have 3 monitors lying around, outside ur budget.

Consider whether ur system upgrade is worthwhile? A Q9450 or Q9550 or even a Q6600 would give u a decent boost over ur E6600 and wouldnt require new mobo and ram, freeing up money for a 5970 ;)

Very good advice. My Q9550 and 5970 eat everything alive :). Plus, the Q9550 is an excellent overclocker. Both components have a fair bit of headroom too.
