So how good is Messi?

Indeed, and Stuttgart were absolutely poo in Champ League, i think Portsmouth would have beat them :p

Let's see how he does Vs Arsenal and RM first....

He won 6 trophies last year including scoring the winning CL goal. I really don't think it matters who he plays against, especially Arsenal and Real who have relatively poor defences to that of Chelsea, Man Utd (with Rio and Vidic) etc. so Arsenal will hardly be his ultimate test, he'll probably wee on Arsenal's defence which will probably include Sol :(

His ability to make any defender he comes across look ordinary is incredible to watch. The way he takes the ball around a single defender two or three times in the lead up to the goal just because he can must be annoying, but nobody seems to be able to stop it

I'm still not sure if the Eto'o swap deal was the best thing ever but dear lord they look unstoppable at the mo.
I think they looked far more threatening with Eto'o in the team last year. Zlatan's good on the ball but he slows their attacks too much just like Bebtaov does at United. Neither were good signings and both have changed the way their teams play for the worse imo.

I just can't get my head around how much they paid for Zlatan... perhaps a straight swap but with all that cash as well? Christ alive Eto'o was lethal in front of goal whereas Zlatan assists a lot more and has the odd spark of pure genious. (and some hilariously powerful freekicks...)

Ibra is having a bad few weeks but during the early part of the season he was providing a service that Eto'o couldn't, holding up the attack well and being a central point for everybody to play off. Not quite sure why he's turned retarded recently but earlier in the season he looked great. I'm not really his biggest fan either, but appreciate he was good before this bad form

Edit - Nowhere worth 70m levels of good though.

I think with the ibra eto swtich pepe is showing the skill that only Fergie has and which makes them great managers. That is getting rid of very good players if they a problem to dressing room.

Problem is that with Argentina, they arent going to win the WC anytime soon...id be surprised if they get past the group stages at this yrs WC...id love to see Messi win a WC but having a crazy ex player Maradona in charge isnt going to help their cause much in all honesty.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to compare the two players - if Argentina are as average as it seems then it's quite an easy analogy to be drawn with the Argentina of 1986 when Maradona did almost singlehandedly win them the World Cup through a combination of talent, will-power and that marvellous header where he out-leapt Shilton. ;)

The above isn't entirely said in seriousness, I don't know whether Messi deserves to be placed with the greatest ever yet - if he continues with his current form and can maintain this sort of level for a few more years then he'll have a very good claim but I'm not a great fan of judging players on this sort of scale until their career is over.

Messi is without doubt a brilliant player but he doesnt carry this form onto the international stage in the same manner! As entertaining as he is, i still find that Ronaldinho was more entertaining in his prime years although the same cant be said of him now. You tube a 9 minute video of ronaldinho and you can see why:D

Didn't know Eto'o was trouble in the dressing room? Any sauces?

I think it had more to do with his wage demands for a new contract. He was arguing that to replace him it would cost ~£40m, so why not just pay him ~£10m a year instead!
On Ibra: I think that the games against Chelsea highlighted a weakness in the Barca attack and they wanted someone that could mix it as well as play.

OT: It's impossible to make a true comparison between players especially between players form different era's. However IMO players are constantly improving and in particular defenders which is making it harder for attackers.

on Pro Evo it's Rooney -> Ronaldo -> Aguero -> anyone else. Messi for some reason isn't *that* good. Rooney is mr. 40 yarder tho.

He's well good on Pro Evo so has to be up there with the best.

Faultless logic is faultless. :D

I watched almost all of Argentina's qualifying campaign and Messi was great, but he can't play vs. 11 on his own which is what he was practically doing throughout. The movement of the Argentina players around him was practically non-existant. There were times where they were literally watching him and not helping him. The team is set up horribly and I don't feel that Maradona has the required intelligence to sort it out, though I really want them to as they have a really good squad

Funny that, sounds exactly like the last couple of England games. Hoof it to Rooney on the half way line and hope he comes up with something. :p

Who's the best defender in the world? Who would you want in your team to deal with the Messi threat? Far harder to judge a defensive player than someone who gets the chance to flaunt it imho.

Could a defender ever win a Young Player of the Year style award?

We need a computer simulation of Maradonna vs messi. We could then follow the life of maradonna and have him compete against messi in a 1v1 game. Maradonna despite being old he puts up a good fight and only narrowly looses. showing that in his prime he was the best....

you could probably make a film along those lines..

We need them to be on Deadliest Warrior.

The best player in the history of football?

Maybe but you will always get people who you could say are stuck in the past and refuse to accept that someone might be as good if not better.

For example Maradona as great a player as he was when you talk about him people will make it out like he put in world class performances week in week out, one person I know was like oh Maradona did this week in week out after a particular game where Messi was on fire. I can't say for sure whether that is right or not but I seriously doubt it.
