Hey all,

So I have been a Windows users since early 1998 or so. Over the years my interest has grown over Apple Mac OS and even more so with OS x. :)

So, I finally decided to buy a new MacBook 13" white notebook. The new 2.4Ghz, core 2 duo etc.

I love it!

The more I am using the OS the more I am loving it. Also, quality of this laptop is out of this world. I mean even the small details, like not having to hold the laptop down while opening the lid to stop it from lifting up. (Very well balanced machine)

What I am most impressed about is also the battery life - been using it the whole day and I have not needed to plug the charger in yet. Just wow. Also the amount of apps that come pre installed are amazing!

So...yes, loving it and am here to stay with OS X - cannot wait for Lion's later this year.

I also bought a copy of Mac OS X Bible - Leopard. I know I am using Snow Leopard, but it should still work fine, right?

Also - any must have apps etc or tips n tricks? Please send them this way. :D

Did exactly the same on Saturday, except I got the 2.8Ghz i7 15" MBP. Love it, so much snappier than my windows machines and it just works. And it looks and feels fantastic, as you said for your MB, the battery life is unreal. I was sat for 4 hours last night doing photo work in Aperture on battery and when I finished it was still reporting a hour left on battery.

Picked up all 3 iWork apps and Aperture from the Mac app store, I definitely recommend taking a browse through the store, quite a lot of great apps that are very well priced.

Awesome, will do that.

This machine is a lot better than my HP Windows 7 laptop. What program do I use for burning DVDs and CDs? Anything free for now?

Planning to take the plunge myself soon :).

Been a Windows user all my life, 21 years now. I fancy a change. 13" MBP for me, I think. I'm gonna wait for the expected April refresh though.

In your applications folder there will be an app called 'iDVD'. That should do the job for burning DVD's. If you want to rip from your DVD's something like 'HandBrake' would prob suffice.

Congrats on the new purchase :D

'Caffeine' (free in the app store) is good to keep the Mac awake also if you're watching a video or whatever.

Buying a book is a good idea although the OSX bible looks a bit dense and more of a reference. I bought the OSX Tiger book by Andy Ihnatko which is a bit old now but a good overview and pretty easy to read. It nothing you can't find out online, but for me it's nice to have it all there in one place.

Welcome to the club! :D

http://mac.appstorm.net/ - good website.

Thanks! :d - Will take a look at that site.

Well I am finding the Bible a very, very good read. I have learnt a crap load from it. :)

The way intel/SB is currently April refresh will be lucky.

Got my 13" MBP in december, first Mac and i dont know how i lived without it!! Quick, clean layout and build quality is excellent.

The more I use this Mac - the more I see the power of it. It's even made the mouse so redundant now. On my old HP laptop - I couldn't stand using the mouse. Now on this awesome MacBook - I can't use a standard mouse with it!. Using the glass trackpad and it rocks!

Does anyone know when Lion is due for release?

Summer 2011. The MacBook trackpad is probably the best trackpad I've used and I always miss the gestures when using a PC laptop. Even if they have their own implementation, it's never as good.

I wish I could say the same for the Mac mice though.

Still using & loving my MacBook, I won it in October and now I actually sit on the sofa just browsing the net instead of going on my PC at times, nice to be able to lounge on my sofa and not feel gimped like I did when using a netbook!

if you want to see how awesome OSX is compared to windows, try an "upgrade" install of OSX Snow Leopard from Leopard

Its a brilliant way of doing things. And it free'd up about 9gb for me. When was the last time a windows upgrade free'd up space rather than took more lol ?

Well I'm fairly sure SB won't be in the next gen of 13" MBPs, 15" and 17" maybe.

Tbh, I'd dying for one as it is, I might just take the plunge.

Try the last time they released a new os?

Windows 7 is about half the size of vista post install....

This laptop came with Snow Leopard already installed on it. However I have heard a lot of people saying that an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard is a major difference in space etc.

My only real concern is keeping this white notebook.....white. NAy tips guys?

Also, I found a cool widget for it - it's called Istat Pro. Very cool. Shows all types of information about the machine. Just go to the dashboard with a quick flick of the hand on the awesome trackpad and its there.

Very, very impressed so far with this laptop. :)

The two main reasons:

1. Snow Leopard is Intel only. Leopard was Universal. So you had loads of redundant code on your system pointlessly eating up disk space.

2. You didn't realise that Snow Leopard reports file sizes in base 10 not base 2. So that 9GB is actually 8.38GB everywhere that isn't Snow Leopard.
