So I bought a used 5820k on the bay..

Was on the hunt for a 5820k for a couple of weeks.

One came up on the bay so I bought it and it arrived this morning.

Having a closer look at it, one of the gold pads on the bottom side of the CPU is worn away to silver. After looking even more closely I spotted the resoldered capacitor at the top too..

The ad only had one photo of the top of the CPU so I wasn't aware of this until this morning.

The description read "very well looked after" and the seller has decent feedback so I didn't see any reason to doubt when I bought it.

I'm still waiting for the rest of my build to arrive so I can't test it yet. My question is, would you guys return it and ask for a refund or hang onto it and if it tests ok, keep it?

I have the sneaking suspicion the seller is a chancer in saying "I wasn't aware of this". He says he bought it from another company for his work PC. Looking at his other listings it would appear he sells refurbished components motherboards, GPU's and stuff. Every other item appears to have multiple images, where the ad for the CPU only shows the top of the CPU. He says he stress tested it before listing without any issues.

What would you guys do? Either way I'll need a CPU.

The possible advantage with this particular CPU (if it works) is it's a J batch chip, while not guaranteed is likely to be a better clocker compared to the earlier batches.

Thanks for the replies guys. The seller has acknowledged the CPU has been repaired after sending him the above image. I'm not convinced it wasn't him who repaired it.
Either way, he knew when he listed it but chose not to mention it in the listing details. Really annoys me when people do this..

He replied saying "Looks like a great solder job" and if I have any issues with it to let him know. I guess this will all go in my favour on the chance of any issue and it needing to go back.

I don't think I can mention the price I paid without breaking the rules of the forum. I paid a used price I suppose. It's hard to put value on what is and isn't a good deal, considering it won't have any warranty now. This is something I checked using the batch number before I bought and paid for it. Going by the Intel website it was a boxed CPU with warranty up until the middle of 2018.

I don't see any others going for the same price so if I return it without checking I'll end up paying more for a replacement.

I'll test it as soon as I can and see how it goes. I don't suppose I can do much else for now.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Zipp0r you're right about the pad being covered in solder. To begin with I thought it had lost the gold coating but it would appear it's still there, just under a layer of solder.

I would have stuck to using the MM but there weren't any 5820k's for sale. I really need to get this up and running in the next week or so, I couldn't wait too much longer on the off chance of one popping up.

8 Pack that's good to know man. I'm wondering why and how the cap came off in the first place. Looking at the one below you'd really need to want to rip it from the PCB to dislodge it. The stock soldering seems pretty solid. Do the replacement caps make a huge difference to IMC potential? I guess this is only something you would want to do for LN2?

I should get the cooler tomorrow but I'm still waiting for a kit of RAM to arrive, that could be next week.

As you guys have suggested, I'll test it and even if it's working fine I'll ask for some money back.

I'll update this as soon as I can and let you all know how I get on.

Yep the MM is the place to go for used bits and pieces guys. Definitely agree the 1000 posts is a good way to keep opportunist scammers away. The shop clearance section has some great deals sometimes but maybe not the best for warranty.

Slightly OT but it would be awesome if there was an agreement in place to transfer ownership of OCUK bought items sold on the MM (providing there is warranty left and a copy of the receipt is kept) Would make it nice and easy to return items even if you are the second owner + it would be more encouragement to buy all your gear from the OCUK store and forum rather than elsewhere.

I guess it's always an idea for the future if it comes up for discussion :)

Cheers, I'm really curious too. The suspense is really starting to getting to me now lol

If it works ok I'll need to have a recap on what I'm doing for x99 overclocking.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a quick and dirty way to check OC potential of the chip? Does 4.5 1.3v seem reasonable enough to start then upping the multi 1x at a time?

Maybe its tuned up like 8pack says and u end up with better chip than standard.
Very curious how much u paid for chip. Think its not against rules to say my mate is having my 5820k plus asrock x99 plus 16gb of ripsaws plus waterblock plus 80mm thick 120rad for 450 pounds. Cpu and bord got 17 months warranty still. Ofc that is price for Mate :) and he knows he pays for setup tuned to maximum in every way like Zeed approved bundle lol.

Was about to ebay it but when he found out he was im having this to replace my 2600k hehe

I don't want to be naughty and break the rules mate. If a mod confirms it's ok I'll let you know :)

The delivery date of the RAM I bought is showing next Wednesday.. ages away yet. I have sent the place a message asking for it to be delivered sooner. I'll just need to wait and see what happens. If it wasn't so rediculously expensive for a 32gb kit I could have had it next day delivery :(

Will keep the thread updated.

I cancelled my original order and now the RAM it's on it's way from OCUK. DPD Saturday delivery so it'll be with me tomorrow.

Will get the chance to play over the weekend so I'll update when I can.

I was thinking Intel use the batch and serial alone for warranty but I could be wrong. If I am, maybe that's a good thing lol.

Ok so it's working guys but I'm struggling to do much with it at the moment.

I'm testing it on air and while I know I'm not going to get the best thermal results it's reaching 90c midway through Realbench stress test 4.2 @ 1.180v :( This is on Cryorig H5 Universal. I was really expecting the temps to be quite a bit lower.

It boots into Windows all the way up to 4.6GHz with 1.3v but I'm not going to be able to test that with a stress test.

I know these chips run hot but does this seem normal? I've reseated the cooler twice now and used two different pastes.

Honestly I'd just return it to save you the headache, I'm sure you've spent at least £200 on this and you don't want issues that can arise because you got something sold to you that hasn't been described accurately. That doesn't sound normal and you've ruled out poor HSF fitting so just return it, you'll have no issue with getting a refund from the seller, if you do just go with seller protection you'll be fine. Keep the picture you uploaded.

Yep I've decided time to send it back :( While it works, something doesnt seem right with the temps + it's looking for a lot of voltage for stability.

Time to look for a new 5820k or 6800k I suppose..

Thanks guys. In answer to the previous question, idle was high 20's-30's and load was quickly jumping from middle 60's to 80's before peaking into the low 90's :( It's going back today and I have a 6800k on the way as a replacement.

Was more expensive than a used 5820k but it comes with a 3 year warranty and I guess I'll feel a bit better knowing it's within the top tier of a platform which will shortly come to an end.

That three letter shop as above really surprises me their prices. Great they're able to offer realistic pricing over the alternatives and act as a reference point for used pricing. I get we all want the best deal but some seem a little reluctant to accept things depreciate in value over time. Especially hardware without a warranty.

To think there's potentially 1GHz across the board difference on the same line of CPU is so random and crazy. Would be really interesting to see a golden chip vs a complete dud compared under a microscope. The 5GHz 5820k's while incredibly rare, make the rest seem utter pants in comparison. While I was testing it at 1.180v it wasn't stable. Would have taken more than 1.2v for 4.2GHz :(

I have a great chip in my main rig which I suppose has made me even more fussy when it comes to this sort of stuff lol.

That said, the 6800k arrived this morning and while I'm hoping it's a good one I'll need to make do with it either way :) This CPU chasing has gone on long enough lol

It's on it's way back guys but man, what a couple of crazy days of anxiety.

I was given a pre paid label to use. It has the tracking number on it already so it's just a case of taking it to the post office to drop it off. We have a mail room at work which works in conjunction with Royal Mail I took it there and handed it over to one of the guys. Later that night when I try and track its whereabouts - "Sorry tracking number not recognised or invalid" eh what..

It's finally updated to "progressing through this network" two days later. I was starting to panic like crazy as I didn't have a receipt going through the mail room at work.

Lesson learned :( don't ever buy a CPU on eBay without seeing the underside of it too.

Anyway, this weekend will be fun :)

Those temps are pretty awesome String :)

This 6800k is sitting idle in the low 20's, I'm seriously impressed so far and I've only just loaded into Windows. A good 10-12c cooler than the dodgy 5820k under the same Cyrorig H5 air cooler.

I'm about to have a play and see what it can do. Wish me luck.. :)

Glad you're getting that sorted :)

I love that x99 IHS's look like something that just fell off of Robocop

Thanks :) I love the look of it too. It really does look like a bit of body armour or a helmet. As far as looking awesomely futuristic I'd give it a 10/10.

I'm not sure if that 5820k was just dodgy but the temps are already 20c lower 10 mins in to RealBench stress test

Some nice 5820k's there guys. This 6800k is looking great so far. It's running so much cooler than the 5820k I had.

I ran out of time last night but it looks like 4.5GHz is possible with just a bit more than 1.3v. I'm able to boot into Windows with 1.25v but crashed when running RealBench. Booted fine at 4.6 with 1.3v, im guessing it'll take 1.325v or slightly more to get it stable.

I'm going to shoot for 4.4 with 1.275v when I get back from work tonight, I'll take it from there :)

Hi 6800K Friend :D , they are nice cpus having just got my setup on monday . going to push for more of an oc on mine this weekend too currently at 4.2

Hey :) Great stuff mate, let me know how you get on. I'm interested to hear how it goes for you.

5 o clock cant come quick enough! I'm desperate to get back home and spend more time on it.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm finally back home after a pretty hellish week at work. It'll be great to sit down this weekend and have the time to play with it properly. Looks like I'm going to be held back a bit by the air cooler I'm using but I'll post the results as soon as I can. I'm tempted to set up a temporary loop but I've only got a spare 120mm rad sitting so probably not worth the hassle.

The kicker is this isn't for me.. :( I'm building a new workstation for my dad. He's upgrading from a 2009 iMac so that'll be his comparison :D he doesn't quite know what to expect so I think he's in for a surprise lol.

Hey, can i be a 6800k friend? :D

Bluntwrapped, thats a great clock if you can get 4.6ghz stable. I've hit a wall at 4.2ghz but temps are brilliant. I can get 4.4ghz but ive got to push on to 1.4v and temps go through the roof. I'm running it on a cheapo coolermaster 120mm AIO as my h100i wont fit due to my ram hitting the rad. Max temps i've seen is 65c!

Welcome to the club mate :) Although, I don't know if I can be the one to say that because I'm here on behalf of my old man lol.

What voltage are you using for 4.2? Those temps aound great. Did you leave cache at stock?

I'm at 1.27v with an offset of +15. Not touched cache but i have looked for it and cant find anything in the bios?

I'm not familiar with the bios of your board mate but I think it falls under target ring frequency.

This is worth a read if you haven't read it. If you jump to page 3 it covers uncore/ring overclocking - http://edgeup.asus.com/2016/06/17/broadwell-e-overclocking-guide/

This chip is looking great so far. I haven't tried but I'm assuming it'll do 4 and 4.1 with stock voltage. I've got 4.2 1.175v, 4.3 1.230v, 4.4 1.3v profiles saved in the bios now.

It's desperately wanting to be water cooled. 1.3v air cooling = insane temps. I reckon I could drop the voltage for 4.4 if i had it running cooler. 4.5 is definitely doable but there's no way for me to check without putting the temp way beyond comfort zone.

The ASUS thermal control tool looks great :) I haven't set it up yet but it you can set a max stable OC in the bios then set a lower stable clock with less voltage though the OS.

When you reach the temperature threshold the multi and voltage drop to the lower OC and voltage automatically.

So I could have a 4.4 OC for light loads and under heavy load it'll drop back to 4.1 with stock voltage.

Quite a handy feature, especially for air cooling.
