I needed one extra license for the HTPC, so I bought a pro upgrade license on a student offer. What I want to know is can I use this key on my home premium install to upgrade it to pro (as in without reinstalling), and then use the original home premium key to install home premium on my HTPC?

I just want to make sure I get everything in order, as I'll install home premium on the HTPC now and sort out the activations once the new key turns up.

WAU - Windows Anytime Upgrade, look in the control panel.

Yeah I appreciate that, but what I'm getting at is:

a) will the 64 bit pro upgrade key work in the anytime upgrade bit?

and

b) will the original home premium key then be free to be used else where?

I'm not sure on A, to my knowledge Anytime Upgrade does use a different set of license keys as seen in another thread where somone was trying to use it with an OEM key. There would be no problem in trying though, setup will merely bounce the key if it doesn't like it.

As for 2, it depends which version you bought, Upgrade, OEM or Retail.

Upgrade and OEM don't allow you to transfer the license across to anothe PC, where as Retail does.

This is based on legality, transferring OEM licenese tends to work allow not allowed in the End User License Agreement.

Yeah I know about the OEM stuff, this is retail though so I should be good to go there. I guess it won't hurt to give it a try anyway. Worse comes to worse I'll reinstall.

Thanks
