Like most on these boards I can build computassss.

Now I have a question. Where would a young lad look for employment building computers? I assume currys pc world don't do this as its all sent in from some warehouse. Rather do something useful part time instead of just being a waiter...

This thread pops up all the time, and the answer is always the same. You won't get a job building computers, or if you do it'll pay minimum wage. It's unskilled work that any moron can do.

It has only ever been a hobby of mine, building / upgrading rigs for myself and friends. The knowledge was useful for getting a job in tech support though, which I then did for 7 years. Currently in CS, not technical related but still phone-based.

There are 2 major competitors to OCUK in Manchester where you can build computers if your looking for p/t job. One is near St Mary's Hospital and the other near the McVities factory.

That depends who you work for ;)

If thats a comment on tipping, then I'd point out that its been illegal to top up employees wages using tips for a good few years now, so any tip paid in a restaurant has to be either paid to the staff member serving, or split across the team, depending on how they choose to operate.

Of course it depends where you work, as naturally a restaurant that is on the cheaper end of the scale is likely to have patrons who don't tip quite the same, but given that paying service is one area of the UK where tipping is expected, its likely you would still make some money even in a rubbish restaurant.

My point still stands though as tips are none exist working in a computer shop or factory putting computers together.

How come PC building is minimum wage? Sure, everyone on OcUK have built their own computers, but aren't we still a minority group? With procedures followed e.g. ESD strap, I thought it was fairly skilled work, like with a boiler repair done by someone who is Gas Safe-registered.

Thats not really skilled work, as people can be taught to do it, its basically an assembly job, which exists in many other lines of work aside from building computers.

A Skilled Worker refers to somebody who has learnt their trade from a College, University or specialised technical course and thus has the qualification to demonstrate that.

Hah, plugging some things into obvious holes is hardly skilled.

I just assumed it was a decently paid job. Nvm.

On the waiter stuff... We put tips into a jar and I've never seen a mint from the uppers. So I just pocket it now. I work for some interesting Chinese and Mongolian men.

'Obvious' after being done a few times yes, but didn't realise it low-skilled. What you got to remember though is the spec-me research prior, making sure you have the right CPU socket, whether it's S-ATA 3, what speed DDR3 memory. I'm guessing it's low-skilled because they're assembling to the same spec PC each time determined by the employer and thus don't need prior research in getting right/wrong parts? So they're building the same PC day in day out, where us OcUKers have built (mostly) different PCs on each build.
