So I failed my practical today...

...rather silly things too! One was a set of traffic lights, I was going left down onto a ramp leading to a dual-carriageway. I had green light, so did oncoming traffic. However, I thought that both my lane and oncoming traffic were moving into a single-lane ramp, and since a bus was coming I stopped. Problem was - it was a dual-lane ramp, and there was a car behind me, who got peeved off with me. That was a "serious" for undue hesitation. Silly thing really, down to experience with the road more than anything, I knew I had failed when (on stopping) I realised that there was another lane there! *insert d'oh sound here* Cue the examiner going "you're not supposed to stop her, it's equal priority" and "That chap in the beemer did not seem amused"

The other was a minute later, still shaken up by my silly mistake earlier, as I was accelerating onto the dual carriageway I managed to shift into 3rd, instead of 5th  I also managed to accumulate some minors on harsh steering and the gear changes (I put that down to nervousness/annoyance with earlier mistakes, as the ramp thing happened 2 minutes into the test).

Oh well. On the plus-side, the examiner said that I drive quite decently and sensibly. Unlucky day I guess. Had the beemer not been behind me (or the bus not there) I would have gotten away with it. Next attempt is in 2 weeks time, we'll see how it will work out :)

LOL he's only like 26, some people don't feel the need or take their test til they're 70. Unlucky mate, you'll pass next time. :)

Good luck for next time.

Oh I see now, yeah I had to leave it late (I know some of my cousins who didn't start taking lessons until they were 35 odd), because of uni, money and time issues.

Unlucky mate, it hurts like hell to fail on something silly, I passed second time, I failed my first test for steering too wide on my reverse round the corner.. its gutting :(

why you left it so late to learn

Damn him for learning at an age where nicer cars and insurance are more affordable;)

Unlucky though mate, you'll do it next time.

Exactly ! I am 27 ! Never needed a car, went to uni, had a job that was 15 mins walk from my house, went back to uni. Now I need car, so i learn.

The only down side is that lessons clost about twice as much as it did when i was 17.

Don't worry i've just failed mine! Can't believe it though. Doing the reverse around corner lowered curb, went up over it and dropped down. If I had pulled forward and done it again it would have been fine. Other then that 7 minors. So miffed off though

Unlucky on the fail, you will pass eventually, it took me 3 goes.

1 thing though.

I find it incredible you failed on a road 2 minutes into a test saying it was inexperience of the road. Surely your examiner should have made you familar with the test routes and different roads on them?? I know mine did and he wasn't the greatest, I ditched him after my first test. I'd have words with him if I were you.

Either that or get an instructor who teaches you to drive properly and safely down any road wether you have been down it before or not. Surely your not saying you should just learn to drive on test routes are you?

After all where are you going to drive when you pass? maybe down roads you have not driven before......

Sounds like a lack of experiance rather than lack of ability, more lessons & more experiance with loads of private practice = Better chance of passing and being safe thereafter :D

Oh and I'm an ADI, and I have only had 2 people go twice for a test in the last year and they were both nerves on the day, EVERYONE else has passed first time with around 4 minors. And no I dont take them on all the test routes. Just the odd little awkward bits in the area other wise we drive all over the place and they can pass easily as they can drive SAFELY down any road wether they have been there before or not :D

I think he was suggesting this......

Sounds like a potentially confusing road system in the OP, which if 2 mins away from the test centre should have been gone through countless times in the lessons really. I know my instructor showed me the dodgy roundabouts, chevrons etc in the test area.

Really? I don't think you've mentioned that before :p

Yes and thats fine but like I say theres no benifit in just learning the test routes etc. I take all my pupils around the local area near the test center and get them familiar with the unusual nippy bits etc

Totally agree with you 100% :)

I wasn't saying just drive on the test routes, that's stupid. I was saying that if there are any unusual and tricky roads on them they should be pointed out and practiced on, especially if they appear on test routes. Even now after driving for a while I come to new roads/roundabouts/junctions etc with weird layouts and think WTF? Road markings and signs are one thing but you can't beat experience.
