Today I went into town and bought me a 360 Elite, it's beautifal :) with GTA4 but there is some problems I am having with GTA4.

First thing, it's very dark, at night time it's so dark I can hardly see where I am going so I bumped up the brightness in game full whack, it did not help much. Also shadows are way dark., Secondly when I first inserted the game into the console, the console said it needed to update itself to play the game, whats all that about? I have not even got it plugged into a modem yet. Also when Nico's phone rings the conversation is a bit low, I set sound options to Sterio but that didnt do nothing.

Other then that I love it, bought the console just to play this game and I think next week I may get a 1080p TV because at the moment its running on SDTV which is so poor I cant even read the symbols on the mini map.

Up the brightness??

Turn background music / sound fx down and talk up if theres an option?? though i think this is a common problem - personally i have sub titles on so dont mind to much

And the update might be a game or dashboard update already stored on the disc.

Lots of people have said its dark elsewhere, unfortunately short of turning up the brightness there isn't a lot you can do about that. The update is a patch for the game, I didn't realise they'd done any for GTA yet. Hope you enjoy your purchase though :)

I found bumping up the in game contrast was a lot better than upping the brightness with regards visibility. I would fiddle with your own Tv's brightness/contrast as well to strike a good balance. I personally only have it one notch to the right for brightness and contrast and saturation at default. Sound is set to stereo on mine and I've had no problems with regards not hearing conversations so I can't help you there.

Btw when your set does arrive I would try it at 720p in the console settings as the image will then be upscaled by your TVs internal scaler instead of the 360's (which would upscale instead of the TV if you set it to 1080p in the console settings). You may find it produces a better image.

Sorry misread your post there I blame the sun :D

As already mentioned there are some contrast and brightness setting in the game options have a mess with those.

Cheers I guess I;ll play with the TV settings as well, I just dont want to mess with the tv settings and then it washes out the colour on other games.

That’s what I do, took me days to get my plasma setting tuned last thing I want to do was mess my TV settings so I upped the Contrast 2 notches and brightness in the game settings and it’s much better, not that it was too bad before but the extra brightness is needed for this game :)

Youll find the update will have been a system update as your console wont have had the newest software on it. The updates normally come on the game discs that require an update.

No patch for GTA is about yet, its all normal so its nothing to worry about.

I turned all 3 sliders in the Display options up 2 notches and it looks wonderful now.:D

If you're getting a TV just for playing your 360 on you might as well just get a 720p, you'll get more value for money. There's only a select few games that are actually true 1080p, most developers will be sticking with 720p and Microsoft encourage them to do so. On a 1080p TV you'll have to upscale from 720p which causes quality loss.

But you will get full 1080p movies when HD goes mainstream. Playing at upscaled
720p is not bad, i have it upscaled on my 1680x1050 monitor and it looks perfectly good.

if you can afford 1080p then get it. Its worth future proofing unless you are waiting for SED/OLED.

No piece of technology is ever future proof. By the time HD movies are mainstream TV tech will have moved on so much. It's better to get a £500 set now and a £500 set in 2.5-3 years time than a £1000 set now imo, just like with PC technology.

Kreeeee ladies and gentlemen, introducing the hammer to the head of the nail with force.

Which is why I have a lovely 50' 720p plasma for 40' 1080p LCD Money and the picture is so much better!! :D

Don’t assume 1080p sets are the bee’s knees.

I had to turn subtitles on, turn up the brightness and turn down the music, then turn my TV up a fair bit. Seems a very common problem.

I know nothing is future proof but if you can get a 1080p set for about £500 now its well worth it considering when HD Television goes into action you will get a better image quality and high definition movies such as blu ray output at 1080p so in my eyes its worth it.

Some people cant live with the upscaling but i dont really notice it much.

weird to read about people having problems with gta iv being dark...i've had no such issues. sound yes, game brightness no. if it helps, i'm using the official vga lead plugged into my samsung 19" lcd tv/monitor.

I dont necessarily think its dark, i dont think the sunlight is organic enough and some of the colours are a bit faded. certainly doesnt look dark though.
